Konkowski Scores A Natural Hat Trick And One
In their second meeting of the 2023-2024 campaign, Sachem snapped a two game skid in a 6-1 win against a Connetqout Sayville BBP T-Birds squad that entered Sunday night’s contest on a three game winning streak. Thomas Konkowski scored the eventual game winning goal with 6:49 remaining in the first frame. Scott Loeb picked up his fourth win in as many starts for Sachem this season. Shane Kirby made his third consecutive start of the season for the Connetqout Sayville BBP T-Birds. Sachem moved to 8-2 on the season. The Connetqout Sayville BBP T-Birds dropped to 4-6 on the campaign.
It took all of seven seconds for Sachem to jump out to a 1-0 lead off of a goal from Thomas Konkowski. The play began after Colin Kalberer won the draw forward. Cameron Kalberer collected the loose puck, entered the zone and made a quick feed to the Sachem Captain who beat Kirby with a picture perfect wrist shot. A roughing minor assessed to Eathan Brdey gave Sachem a chance to jump out to a 2-0 lead, but Kirby and the T-Birds successfully killed off the minor penalty. Joseph Villani was a standout performer in his Varsity debut for the T-Birds. The former freshman phenom tried to answer back at the seven minute mark, but a kick save by Loeb sent the rebound into the far side corner of the Sachem defensive zone. Sachem blue liner Sean Walsh collected the loose puck, made a lead pass to Colin Kalberer, who then threaded the needle on a stretcgh pass to a streaking Konkowski who slipped behind the T-Birds defense. Villani attempted to chase him down, but the Sachem southpaw beat Kirby five hole on the breakaway to make it 2-0 with 6:49 remaining in the first period. Konkowski completed the natural hat trick on a 1 on 1 rush into the T-Birds defensive zone. The Sachem Captain cut into the slot, used the defender as a screen, and fired a shot across his body to beat Kirby. In the dying seconds of the period, Eathan Brdey was sent back to the box after being called for his second of three roughing penalties in the game. The T-Birds trailed 3-0 after fifteen minutes of play.
At the start of the second stanza, Logan Booth Alum drew a minor penalty against Sachem which led to a scrum breaking out. Sachem blue liner Angelo Mascaro was assessed a five minute major and game misconduct for fighting. T-Birds forward Alexander DeLeon and Sachem defenseman Sean Walsh were sent to the box for offsetting minor penalties. Jack Mercado’s minor penalty for cross checking went up on the board. After a 4 on 3 man advantage for Sachem came to an end, Connetquot Sayville BBP was unable to capitalize on a three minute power play. With 2:52 remaining in the frame, Konkowski forced a turnover before cutting in and scoring his fourth straight goal of the game. Sachem defenseman Joseph Capece scored his first of the season with 1:11 remaining in the second frame. The T-Birds were down 5-0 after two periods.
With 11:00 remaining in the third frame, Richard Guterwill scored on a 2 on 1 opportunity with Logan Booth Alum being credited with an assist. Guterwill centered Booth Alum and former PatMed Raider Alexander DeLeon for the majority of last night’s contest. The T-Birds trio played with skill and sandpaper all night long. Gregory Monthie scored a power play goal to give Sachem a 6-1 lead with 1:55 remaining in the game.

Upcoming Schedule
A New Win Streak Begins?
Sachem will square off with the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls on Monday, December 4th at 8:10 PM. In the first meeting of the season between these two clubs, Cameron Kalberer scored in overtime to secure a 5-4 win for Sachem. Thomas Konkowski and co need to pick up two points in order to reclaim the top seed in the Varsity division.
No Margin For Error.
The Connetqout Sayville BBP T-Birds will take on the West Islip Lions on Wednesday, December 6th at 7:50 PM. The first meeting between these two teams was an old fashioned barn burner which ended in an 8-6 loss for the T-Birds. After three straight losses to kick off the campaign, the T-Birds can ill afford to drop back-to-back games now. They certainly can’t afford to lose the season series to a West Islip Lions squad battling to secure a playoff berth.
