Tigers Win Senior Night Thriller Over Lions
Michael Agafonov scored twice as the Northport Huntington Tigers (8-12) defeated the Longwood Lions (0-19-0-1) by a final score of 4-1 on Senior Night. Connor King picked up his fourth win of the season for the Tigers. Anthony Frega made his eleventh start of the season for the Lions.
Billy Keegan, better known to teammates as Keegs, opened the scoring with his first career Varsity goal on Senior Night to give the Longwood Lions a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into the opening frame. Aydan Azmoun, who is nicknamed Azy, came in on the forecheck and forced a turnover beneath the goal line. Azy settled the puck before dishing it to Keegs, who rifled it home on a shot from beneath the hash marks. After the first minute of the 1st period, Longwood’s Anthony Frega and Northport Huntington’s Connor King stole the show with a series of shows stopping saves. After the first fifteen minutes, the Longwood Lions led the Northport Huntington Tigers 1-0.
Liam Truicko put the Tigers on the board 12:36 remaining in the second stanza. James Ionadis fired a shot from the point that was blocked, but Truicko pounced on the loose puck and fired a shot through traffic that beat Frega. Northport Huntington took a 2-1 lead courtesy of Michael Agafonov with 11:07 remaining in the 2nd period. The Tigers captain, Eric Craft, made a backhanded pass from the right wing corner to face off dot where Agafonov sniped stick side high. The Lions trailed 2-1 after two periods thanks to heroics of their goaltender Anthony Frega, but Tigers netminder Connor King was a brick wall in net.
Michael Agafonov scored his second of the game with 7:18 remaining in the 3rd period. Ryan Collins made a stretch pass to Agafonov, who finessed his way past the defender before going top shelf with a backhanded shot. Liam Truicko potted the empty net goal with 48 seconds remaining to secure a 4-1 win for the Northport Huntington Tigers.
