Thomas Ivers Is Him.
The East Islip star needs no introduction. Thomas Ivers, the league leader in assists and total points, put on a clinic on Wednesday night as the East Islip Chiefs cruised to an 8-3 victory over the Ward Melville Patriots. Cory McGovern picked up his third win of the campaign for the Chiefs. Robert Huhne made his fifth start of the season for the Patriots. The Chiefs moved to 9-1-2 on the campaign. The Patriots dropped to 3-8-1 on the season.
Thomas Ivers opened the scoring at 11:38 in the first period. The EI centerman intercepted a pass off the right wing wall, cut in and fired a shot on Huhne, then buried his own rebound. The Chiefs jumped out to a two goal lead off a goal from Anthony Pepe. The play began with Lawrence Lena finding Thomas Ivers beneath the goal line, who threaded the needle on a pass to Pepe who beat Huhne five hole on a wrist shot from the doorstep. The Patriots came roaring back with two goals in a span of one minute and two seconds. Mathew Dann beat McGovern on an off angle shot that went off the netminder and in at 6:01. Daniel Breslin scored a power play goal to tie the game at two. Lucas Scolaro was credited with the lone assist on the play. Thomas Ivers fired back with a power play goal at 1:35 in the first frame. It was a great individual effort by the EI center who came in one on three, used the defender as a screen, and fired a shot that beat Huhne five hole. East Islip led by one goal after fifteen minutes
The Chiefs took over in the second stanza. A point shot on the power play by Ivers was redirected past Huhne by Anthony Marazzito for the eventual game winning goal. At 7:58 in the frame, Anthony Pepe made a beautiful pass on the power play to set up an Anthony Marazitto one timer that gave the Chiefs a two goal lead.
At 10:58 in the third frame, Peter Marazzito scored his first career varsity goal from the backdoor after a beautiful cross crease feed by Tierney Recenello who garnered his first varsity point on the play. Bryan Slattery made it 7-2 on a bar down shot that beat Huhne blocker side high. The Patriots fired back on a power play goal at 5:43 in the third period. Daniel Breslin went coast to coast on the play, fired a shot that was deflected by the stick of Slattery, gathered the loose puck beneath the Chiefs goal line, and made a nice pass to a wide open Aidan Ayers who beat McGovern short side. Just over a minute later, EI fired back to make it 8-3. Luke LaFata got the zone entry, waited for Anthony Pepe to slip past the Patriots defense, and threaded the needle on a pass which led to a backhanded shot from below the hashmarks by Pepe that beat Huhne.
Thomas Ivers scored twice and garnered three assists on the first five goals of the game for EI. The kid from JV, Tierney Recenello and Peter Marazzito, impressed in what was each players second career varsity contest. Peter is the younger brother of EI star Anthony Marazzito. The Patriots kept the game close early, but were unable to contain the high octane Chiefs offense. Aidan Ayers and Lucas Scolaro continue to impress for the Patriots. Daniel Breslin continues to show why he is one of the best defenseman in the SCHSHL. Ward Melville continues to look the part of a team that can go toe-to-toe with top flight competition, but Chiefs came ready to play after the Patriots fought the Knights to a draw last Wednesday.
