Sachem Rolls On

Thomas Konkowski netted a hat trick as Sachem defeated the Northport Huntington Tigers 8-3. Sachem moved to 9-2-1 on the season. The Northport Huntington Tigers dropped to 5-7 on the year. Scott Loeb picked up his fifth win of the season for Sachem. Boden Rudloff made his seventh start of the campaign for the Northport Huntington Tigers. 

With 12:37 remaining in the first frame, Sachem jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a goal from Konkowski. The Sachem Captain carried the puck in along the left wing wall, pulled up right before reaching the goal line, and fired a shot that went over the shoulder of Rudloff. Just over a minute later, Konkowski scored his second of the game. The play began after the Sachem Star split the defense and fired a shot that just went wide. Colin Kalberer collected the puck off the back boards, but his attempt to stuff it short side was turned aside by Rudloff. Cameron Kalberer collected the rebound and got the puck to Konkowski who buried it from the back door. Ryan Colapinto made it a one goal game after burying a rebound off a shot by Eric Craft. Sachem led 2-1 after fifteen minutes of play. 

Colin Kalberer put Sachem back up by two with 6:24 remaining in the 2nd stanza. The Sachem centerman blew by one defender, cut to the net, and beat Boden Rudloff five hole before the second Tigers defender could react. Twenty-seven seconds later, Ryan Colapinto scored his second of the night as he went forehand-backhand to score his second on the night. The Tigers center forced a turnover at his own blue line, J.T. Caruso skated into it in the neutral zone, before moving right back to Colapinto The aforementioned Caruso played a role in all three goals scored by the Tigers, but was not credited with an assist on the second goal. Just over a minute later, Alp Octu scored the eventual game winning goal on a shot that beat Rudloff from the right wing dot. Sachem wasn’t done yet. After Konkowski chipped the puck off the wall, Gregory Monthie won the race to the puck, cut to the net, and pulled up as he beat a sliding Rudloff glove side high. Konkowski should have been credited with an assist on the play.

Carter LaCorte put the Northport Huntington Tigers back within two on a shot that beat Loeb five hole. Konkowski scored the first of three Sachem goals in a span of forty-eight seconds on a breakaway at 3:38. Forty-five seconds later, Gregory Monthie scored his second of the game on a breakaway wrist shot. Cameron Kalberer scored off a backhanded shot from just inside the left wing circle that beat Rudloff blocker side high.

A Rematch With Playoff Implications

The Northport Huntington Tigers kept the game within reach until late in the 3rd period, but have now dropped four of their last five matchups. The Northport Huntington Tigers will look to get back in the win column on Friday, December 15th at 10:10 Pm against the West Islip Lions. In the first meeting between these two clubs, it was J.T. Caruso who score the game winning goal in overtime for the Tigers. With West Islip on the outside looking in as the playoff race heats up, SCHSHL fans should expect an exciting matchup between two teams looking to secure a post-season berth.

Is The Second Half Surge For Real?

After winning seven straight games to open the season, Sachem dropped two straight contests to EI and KPC. In the three games since that skid, Thomas Konkowski has scored eleven goals and tallied three assists on nineteen total goals for his club. The Sachem captain was recently tendered by the P.A.L. Junior Islanders NCDC squad which is among the best Junior A clubs in the nation. Sachem will be back in action against The Longwood Lions on Monday, December 18th at 8:10 PM. Sachem won round one by a final score of 12-3.
