Pollard Scores Golden Goal In OT Thriller

HAUPPAUGE N.Y. (LISN) – Senior Ciaran Pollard scored the game winner to cap off a five goal, six point performance to lead the West Islip Lions (2-4) to a 7-6 overtime victory over the Middle Country Cougars (0-6). The West Islip Captain finished with six points on the night, and has three hat-tricks on the season. The Lions star leads the SCHSHL in goals (14) and points (19). 

Senior Harold Stauffer netted his first career varsity hat-trick before scoring his fourth of the night on the power play to send the game to overtime. The Middle Country Captain netted two of his four goals on the power play in a five point performance. 

Senior Nick Perpall scored a power play goal and added two assists for West Islip. Junior Colin Hovanec picked up his first career varsity win for the Lions. 

Stauffer scored a power play goal with 6:31 left in the 1st period to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The Cougars Captain beat the goaltender on an off-angle shot that was assisted by Senior Jared Catapano

Pollard tied the game with 5:17 left in the opening frame. The West Islip star slipped by one defender, came in on a breakaway, and went backhand-forehand to score five-hole. 

Pollard scored a shorthanded, breakaway goal to give the Lions the lead with 3:06 remaining in the first stanza. 

Stauffer tied things up at two with 11:35 left in the 2nd period.

Pollard completed the hat-trick with 6:52 remaining in the second stanza to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. The Lions Captain went five-hole to score a breakaway goal that was assisted by Senior Chris Castellino.

Senior Ian McGee scored his first career varsity goal on the power play with 2:10 left in the second frame to tie the game. Senior Alex Theodorellis made a backhand feed to McGee who rifled it by a sliding Hovanec. 

Junior Thomas Albertelli scored his first of the season on a shot from the slot with 12:40 left in the 3rd period to put West Islip up 4-3. 

Stauffer sniped five-hole on a breakaway to complete the hat-trick and tie the game with 8:55 remaining in the third stanza. 

Pollard scored on a one-timer assisted by Perpall with 7:20 to go in the final frame. 

Junior Declan Munkwitz went top shelf to tie it at five apiece with 3:30 left in the 3rd period. 

Perpall scored a power play goal with 28 seconds left in regulation to put the Lions up 6-5. The Lions Senior thought he had the game winner, but a penalty assessed to Pollard put West Islip on the penalty kill, and Stauffer scored to send the game to overtime. 

Pollard went end-to-end, dangled past the defender, and beat the goaltender on a wicked wrister to win it with 2:52 left in overtime.
