SCHSHL Power Rankings – Weeks 10 and 11

Published

on

Each week LISN runs the numbers through our AI Analytics program in order to analyze each team’s performance to date. Our model is designed to evaluate team performance based on the quality of competition, margin of victory, goal differential by period, high danger scoring chances and a multitude of other factors tracked by LISN. This list is not indicative of the current standings, although there may be similarities between the two.

1st Kings Park Commack Knights

Games Played: 11 | Wins: 8 | Losses: 1 | Ties: 2 | Goals For: 49 | Goals Against: 20 | Goal Differential: +20 | PPG: 5 | PPGA: 1 | SHG: 2 | PIM: 78

The Knights are in the middle of the pack in total scoring, but a positive goal differential on special teams coupled with a high end defense have been a huge factor in remaining first overall in our rankings. The Knights ability to stay out of the box will prove critical against teams like EI and Sachem which thrive on the power play.

2nd Sachem

Games Played: 12 | Wins: 9 | Losses: 2 | Ties: 1 | Goals For: 75 | Goals Against: 35 | Goal Differential: +40 | PPG: 7 | PPGA: 10 | SHG: 7 | PIM: 226

Sachem is one of the most effective teams in the SCHSHL at 5 on 5, but their league leading 226 penalty minutes have cost them games this season. When everyone is drawing into the lineup, Sachem can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

3rd East Islip Chiefs

Games Played: 12 | Wins: 9 | Losses: 1 | Ties: 2 | Goals For: 87 | Goals Against: 37 | Goal Differential: +50 | PPG: 14 | PPGA: 7 | SHG: 7

EI has scored as many goals on the penalty as they have allowed and boast the leagues best goal differential. According to our model, the Chiefs spend more time trailing than other teams ranked in the top five of the standings. Fifty-nine of their goals for have come against below .500 competition.

4th St. Anthony’s Friars

Games Played: 12 | Wins: 7 | Losses: 5 |Goals For: 53 | Goals Against: 35 | Goal Differential: +18 | PPG: 8 | PPGA: 9 | SHG: 2 | PIM: 142nd

The Friars are on a heater with wins in five of their last six games, but a tendency to take penalties has cost the club in key moments. St. Anthony’s gets credit for not losing games they should win, but the Friars will need to pull out a couple wins against teams ranked ahead of them in the standings to move into the top three seeds.

5th Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls

Games Played: 11 | Wins: 5 | Losses: 4 | Ties: 2 | Goals For: 67 | Goals Against: 32 | Goal Differential: +35 | PPG: 12 | PPGA: 5 | SHG: 4 | PIM: 115

The Bulls have held the lead at one point in all eleven games played this season, with four losses coming by one goal. If the Bulls can hold onto the lead more often, then Smithtown Hauppauge could make a deep run in this year’s SCHSHL playoffs.

6th Connetquot Sayville BBP T-Birds

Games Played: 12 | Wins: 5 | Losses: 7 | Goals For: 36 | Goals Against: 45 | Goal Differential: -9 | PPG: 6 | PPGA: 3 | SHG: 1

After a 1-5 start to the season, the T-Birds have been stronger in second leg of the regular season. Connetqout Sayville won round two against West Islip, but will need to defeat the Bulls or another top five ranked opponent to climb in the standings.

7th Northport Huntington Tigers

Games Played: 5 | Wins: 5 | Losses: 7 | Goals For: 36 | Goals Against: 66 | Goal Differential: -30 | PPG: 8 | PPGA: 3 | SHGA: 3  | PIM: 117

After winning three games in overtime in the first leg of the campaign, the Tigers have dropped four of their last five contests. The model never fully bought into the Tigers hot start, but it also doesn’t buy into this recent stretch. The Tigers came back down to Earth and it hurt, but Northport Huntington only lost 3-0 to the Bulls. The Tigers trailed by two-to-three goals for the majority of their matchup against Sachem.

8th Ward Melville Patriots

Games Played: 12 | Wins: 3 | Losses: 8 | Ties: 1 | Goals For: 39 | Goals Against: 59 | Goal Differential: -20 | PPG: 4 | PPGA: 17 | SHGA: 4 | PIM: 140

According to our model, the Patriots are one of the better squads in the SCHSHL at 5 on 5 as Ward Melville has given up seventeen goals against on the power play this season. The Ward Melville Patriots also gave up 20 total goals to the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls and Sachem, but played with ten skaters in both losses.

9th West Islip Lions

Games Played: 11 | Wins: 3 | Losses: 8 | Goals For: 28 | Goals Against: 51 | Goal Differential: -23 | PPG: 9 | PPGA: 4 | SHG: 1 | PIM: 81

The Lions are looking to snap a five game skid in which they have been blanked twice and have been outscored 26-8 during that stretch. A solid penalty kill and power play unit suggest the West Islip Lions are better than their record indicates.

10th Longwood Lions

Games Played: 11 | Wins: 0 | Losses: 11 | Goals For: 18 | Goals Against: 108 | Goal Differential: -98 | PPG: 2 | PPGA: 19 | SHG: 2

The Lions inaugural varsity team has lost eleven consecutive games to kick off the season and will look to right the ship in the next few weeks.
