Kings Quell Quakers Comeback In 5-4 Win
Justin Roth scored twice including a shorthanded, empty net game winning goal as the Wantagh/ Seaford/ Plainedge Kings (6-7-0-1) won 5-4 over the Friends/ North Shore Academy Quakers (7-7-1). Joe Columbel made 32 saves in his 5th win of the season for the Kings. Clarke Beard made 32 saves in his eighth start of the season for the Quakers.
Guanlin Sheng redirected a shot by Remon Cao past Columbel with 13:09 remaining in the 1st period to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Denier sniped stick side high on a shot from the left wing face off dot to tie the game with 8:52 left in the opening frame. Justin Roth used the defenseman as a screen to snipe glove side high to give the Kings a 2-1 lead with 3:00 remaining in the 1st period.
Remon Cao evened the score with a backhand shot with 2:29 remaining in the second stanza. Cooper Schulz provided support on the forecheck to force a turnover which led to Cao firing a quick shot from the bottom of the left wing face off dot. Tommy Asaro scored the go-ahead goal with six seconds left in the period. Asaro entered the zone along the right wing wall, slipped the puck under the stick of the first defender and through the legs of a second as he evaded two back checkers before going forehand-backhand to put the Kings up 3-2.
Ryan Agovino scored on a quick backhand shot after a defensive zone turnover with 7:30 remaining in the 3rd period to extend the Kings lead to two. The Quakers elected to call timeout after the Kings took a 4-2 lead. After the Quakers pulled their goaltender while on the power play, Justin Roth potted a shorthanded empty net goal to give the Kings a 5-2 lead with 2:31 left in regulation. The Quakers kept their netminder on the bench in favor of an extra attacker and were rewarded when Blaise Saad connected with Cooper Schulz who scored from the back door with 1:27 remaining to cut the Kings lead to two. Andrew McCarten crashed the net to cash in on a rebound opportunity with 38 seconds left in the final frame to make it a one goal game. The Kings called timeout following the Quakers second goal in 49 seconds. The Kings did a good job keeping the puck out of their own end in the final 38 seconds as they survived to win 5-4.
