Hornets Survive Storm

Luke Guttman made twelve saves in the 3rd period as the Half Hollow Hills Hornets (7-3-0-1) held onto to defeat the Valley Stream/ Sewanhaka/ Lynbrook Storm (5-8) by a final score of 4-3. Guttman picked up his fourth win of through eight appearances this season for the Hornets. Patrick Algozzini got the nod in net for his tenth start of the season for the Storm.

Joe Castellano scored to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead with 51 seconds gone by in the 1st period. Castellano gained the zone, fired a shot from the top of the right wing dot that was turned aside by Algozzini, before crashing the net to cash in on the rebound. After a minor penalty went against the VSSL Storm, Jonathan Wheeler scored a power play goal to extend the Hornets lead to two with 3:11 gone by in the frame. A shot from the slot by Castellano was kicked out by the left pad of the Storm netminder where Wheeler tapped it home. Dylan Reader scored on a shot from the point to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead with 5:37 gone by in the period. Jesse Santangelo was assessed a two minute minor and ten minute misconduct for head contact with 8:24 gone by in the first frame. The VSSL Storm’s Rosario Parrino was helped off the ice due to an injury at the stoppage. Ben Rachlin scored a shorthanded goal to put Half Hollow Hills up by 4-0. Rachlin split the defense, cut in and fired a shot stick side high. The Half Hollow Hills Hornets outshot VSSL Storm 12-4 in the first frame. The Hornets scored a power play goal as well as a shorthanded goal in the frame. 

The tide turned in favor of the Storm at the start of the 2nd period. Nicky Naumov put the Storm on the board with 6:35 gone by in the second stanza. Patrick O’Doherty made a stretch pass to Nicky Naumov, who fired a shot on a 2 on 1 that was turned aside by Guttman before Naumov crashed the net to bury the rebound. Tyler Darnell made it a two score game with 10:14 gone by in the 2nd period. Billy Algozzini made a pass to Patrick O’Doherty who found a cutting Darnell who beat Guttman on a shot from the net front to complete the tic-tac-toe play. Billy Algozzini made it a one goal game on a shot from the right wing face off dot with 11:13 gone by in the period. Algozzini entered the zone, carried the puck from the left wing to the right wing, before firing a shot that slipped beneath the glove and above the left pad of Guttman. The Storm outshot the Hornets 9-7 in the second frame. Half Hollow Hills was unable to capitalize on the lone power play of the 2nd period. 

Luke Guttman came up clutch in the final frame as the Hills netminder turned aside all twelve shots he faced. The VSSL Storm went on the power play after the Hornets committed an ill advised holding penalty in the offensive zone with 13:27 gone by in the period. The Storm went onto pull Algozzini in favor of an extra attacker to create a six on four man advantage, but the Hornets held off the Storm until the final buzzer sounded. After a scrum broke out at the end of regulation, Half Hollow Hills’s Jonathan Wheeler was assessed the lone game misconduct penalty at the end of regulation.
