East Islip Comeback Stuns Sachem
In a game that was defined just as much by who did not draw into the lineup as those who took to the ice, East Islip secured two crucial points in the standings in a 5-4 victory over Sachem. Anthony Pepe scored the Game Winning Goal for East Islip with 3:33 remaining in the third period. Cory McGovern started his fourth game of the 2023-2024 campaign for EI. He has compiled a 2-0 record this season while allowing just six goals through 107 minutes. LISN learned that Brody Dickson would be between the pipes for East Islip at the start of the second frame. Dickson has now posted a 4-0-2 record through four starts and six games played for EI. He has given up nineteen goals in 252 minutes with a GAA of 3.39. Michael DiGirolamo started his second straight game for Sachem, but he has now dropped to 4-2 on the campaign. The Sachem goaltender has given up twenty goals with a GAA of 3.33 on the campaign. Eleven of the twenty goals scored against Digirolamo have came in back-to-back losses against KPC and EI.
Liam Godbout opened the scoring on a one-timer assisted by Luke LaFata. It was the first SCHSHL Varsity goal of Godbout’s career. The EI forward registered five tucks and two apples in eleven JV games during the 2022-2023 season. Gregory Monthie fired right back with a shot from the top of the near-side dot for Sachem with 6:06 gone by in the first frame. A penalty drawn by Cameron Kalberer put Sachem on the power play with 5:33 remaining in the period. Less than a minute later, an icing by EI led to the puck becoming caught in the twine beneath the goal line. It was poked free from the back of the net by Sachem, but Luke LaFata collected the loose puck and scored a short handed goal to put EI back up by one. Richard Bovich scored the equalizer on the power play to tie the game at two apiece. The Sachem star broke the EI defenders ankles before beating Dickson five hole. After a penalty by Christopher O’Hea with under two minutes remaining, Sachem went on the attack with a short-handed 2 on 1 opportunity. Cameron Kalberer was held up by East Islip’s Christopher Lawlor, but Kalberer recovered and found a cutting Nyckie Ress in the slot. He buried the short-handed shot to put his team up by one. Sachem led 3-2 after fifteen minutes of play.
Both the aforementioned Nyckie Ress and Colin Kalberer were not on the ice for warmups, but each player arrived before the end of the first period. Both players were coming from travel games. Ress is rostered on the PAL JR Islanders 15 U AAA roster. Kalberer is rostered on the Arrows U-18 AAA team which plays in the Tier 1 Hockey Federation. Ryan Anatra, Brody Dickson, Thomas Ivers, Thomas Konkowski and Anthony Pepe are also members of the very same Arrows U-18 AAA team. The EI stands went wild as Anatra, Dickson, Ivers and Pepe took to the ice during the first intermission. Konkowski was suspended for the game after he was assessed a major penalty for spearing against KPC.
Just forty seconds into the second stanza, Anthony Marazitto scored a power play goal on a one-timer assisted by Ivers. Brody Dickson made a series of show stopping saves, but couldn’t hold the lead. With 8:56 left in the 2nd period, Gregory Monthie buried a rebound that came off a shot by Michael Mauro. Sachem continued to press, but Dickson shut the door for the remainder of the game. Ryan Anatra made a Michigan move beneath the goal line, but Michael DiGirolamo stopped him in his tracks with a great save. Sachem led by one goal after thirty minutes of play.
A flurry of penalties committed by EI and Sachem took center stage at the start of the final frame. Michael Mauro was assessed a major penalty for spearing with 13:44 remaining in the third period. He is the second Sachem player in as many weeks to be called for spearing. Anthony Marazitto was also sent to the sin bin for two minutes. Luke LaFata and Colin Kalberer would follow suit. Late in the period, an errant pass by Sachem gave EI possession in their offensive zone. Anthony Pepe beat the defender with a beautiful toe drag before scoring the GWG on a beautiful wrist shot. Ivers was accredited with the primary assist, but he was called for hooking with 1:59 remaining in regulation. Sachem called DiGirolamo to the bench which gave them a 6 on 4 man advantage. EI held onto to win 5-4.
