Eagles Soar Past Chiefs
Nick Morolla scored the game winning goal in the third period as the Bethpage Eagles (7-3) defeated the Massapequa Chiefs (3-7) by a final score of 5-4. Matteo Bellise made twenty-five saves in his sixth win of the season for the Eagles. Connor Coyle made twenty-seven stops in his ninth start of the season for the Chiefs.
Tyler Wodika scored five-hole on the breakaway to open the scoring for the Bethpage Eagles with 5:52 gone by in the first frame. The Eagles outshot the Chiefs 9-5 in the 1st period. The Chiefs went 0 for 1 on the power play in the first frame.
Hudson Schnatter fired right back with a breakway goal of his own with 1:41 gone by in the second stanza. Twenty-eight seconds later Schnatter scored on a shot from the slot to give the Chiefs their first and only lead of the night. Joseph Corso redirected a shot from Nick Morolla to tie the game with 10:07 gone by in the 2nd period. Eleven seconds later Brandon Kotapka scored his first career NYIHSHL goal on a rebound to put Bethpage back up by one. The Eagles outshot the Chiefs 17-10 but failed to capitalize on two power play opportunities including a brief 5 on 3 man advantage. After Bethpage was assessed a minor penalty on the power play, Massapequa was unable to capitalize on a one minute and ten second power play. A Head Contact penalty that went against the Chiefs put the Eagles on the power play at the end of the 2nd period.
With nineteen seconds gone by in the final frame Stavros Likourentzos scored a power play goal to give the Eagles a two goal lead. Gavin Morris scored his first career NYIHSHL Varsity goal to put the Chiefs back within one with 7:03 gone by in the frame. Just over a minute later Morris scored his second of the night to tie the game. Nick Morolla scored on the power play to put Bethpage back up by one with 8:52 gone by in the 3rd period. The Chiefs pulled Coyle in favor of an extra attacker, but the Eagles held onto win 5-4. The Chiefs outshot the Eagles 14-6 in the 3rd period, but Matteo Bellise shut the door in the final minutes of the 3rd period.
Bethpage outshot Massapequa 32-29 over a full forty-five minutes. The Eagles were a perfect five for five on the penalty kill and scored on two of four power play opportunities in the game. The Chiefs scored all four of their goals at 5 on 5.
