Bethpage Bounces Back Against Half Hollow Hills

Joe Corso scored the eventual game winning goal with 13:37 gone by in the first frame. Matteo Bellise made 29 saves in his third win through four starts this season. Luke Guttman made 39 stops in his fourth start of the season for the Hornets. Eagles star Marko Lisica did not draw in for the second consecutive contest. The Bethpage Eagles defeated the Half Hollow Hills Hornets by a final score of 4-1. The Eagles moved to 4-1 through five games this season. The Hornets have dropped to 2-3 after back-to-back losses.

Neither team could gain an edge in the opening minutes of the 1st period. The Eagles got an early opportunity on the power play after a roughing penalty was assessed to Hornets blue liner Dylan Solomon with 2:58 gone by in the frame. Guttman and the Hornets PK kept the game scoreless. With 7:18 gone by in the period, Eagles Captain Jake Kelly was sent to the box for slashing. The Hornets failed to capitalize. After a successful penalty kill, Bethpage got back to the basics. A simple chip and chase play allowed Tyler Wodika to gain possession deep in the Half Hollow Hills defensive zone. Wodika made a drop pass off the wall to Stavros Likourentzos, who threaded the needle on a feed to the backdoor where Jake McAuliffe lit the lamp for the Eagles with 9:45 gone by in the period. With less than two minutes remaining in the frame, Tyler Wodika continued to make himself indispensable to the Eagles. The two-way winger forced a takeaway in his own zone, turned up ice and made a lead pass to spring first year forward Joe Corso in transition. The Bethpage rookie came across the Half Hollow Hills blue line, cut to the inside and beat the Hornets netminder blocker side high for the first goal of his NYIHSHL career. The Eagles led 2-0 after fifteen minutes.

A flurry of penalties took center stage in the second stanza. The Eagles successfully killed off a slashing penalty committed by Nicholas Morolla, before going on the power play after Joe Castellano was assessed a two minute minor penalty for roughing. The Eagles odd man advantage was cut short by a hooking call that went against Stavros Likourentzos. Just over a minute later, a great individual effort by Michael LoBosco on the PK made it a three goal game. The left handed winger chipped the puck past a Hornets defender to get the zone exit, carried the puck into Half Hollow Hills territory and buried a rebound that came off of his initial shot. With 9:50 gone by in the second period, Benjamin Rachlin scored the lone Hornets goal of the game on the power play. The goal came off a wrist shot from the left side dot of the Bethpage defensive zone. The Eagles led by two goals after two periods of play.

In the final minute of regulation, an empty net goal by Jake McAuliffe sealed the deal for the Bethpage Eagles. Matteo Belisse made 10 saves in the 3rd period to cap off a night where he stood on his head for the Eagles. The ever reliable Luke Guttman made 13 saves in the stanza for the Hornets, but he was unable to pull out the win.
