Bulls Beat Patriots 9-5
Jackson Cantalupo netted the eventual game winner as the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls defeated the Ward Melville Patriots 9-5. The Bulls moved to 7-4-3 on the year. The Patriots dropped to 3-10-1. Aidan Halliday started in goal for the Bulls, but was relieved by Patrick Ryan in the second stanza. Bobby Huhne started his sixth game of the year for the Patriots. Ahead of Monday night’s matchup, Dean Falcone and Michael Wagner were called up from Smithtown Hauppauge JV Red for the second time this season.
Raymond Sherwood scored a power play goal with 10:32 remaining in the first frame to open the scoring for the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls. The Bulls continued to bring the heat. With 9:08 remaining in the period, Jackson Cantalupo tapped one home off a great feed from the Captain, Bobby Trites. Forty-two seconds later, the Bulls Captain threaded the needle on a pass to a cutting Cantalupo, who slid behind the Patriots defense and went forehand-backhand to put the Bulls up 3-0. With 7:08 remaining in the period, Brendan Landrigan went bar down to extend the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls lead to four. Patriots Head Coach, Jim Griffin, proceeded to call a timeout that would pay dividends for Ward Melville. The Patriots line of Aiden Ayers, Timothy Brown and Lucas Scolaro would play a key role in the comeback attempt thanks to their tenacious two-hundred foot play. After the Brown line forced an errant pass by the Bulls in their own zone, Lucas Scolaro pounced on the loose puck and beat Halliday glove side high to put the Patriots on the board with 3:14 remaining in the frame. With 1:10 left to go in the first period, Daniel Breslin scored a power play goal on a shot that was deflected through traffic past Halliday. Lucas Scolaro scored a buzzer beater goal to cut the Bulls lead to one.
At the start of the second stanza, John McCormick slipped behind the Bulls defense and received a pass from Michael Eilenberger. The Patriots center then came in on the breakaway and went forehand-backhand to tie the game at 4-4. Head Coach Mark Dubeau responded by pulling Halliday in favor of Patrick Ryan. The move sparked a chance in momentum. With 7:51 remaining in the period, Bobby Trites scored the go-ahead goal on a breakaway that was set up by a beautiful feed from Adam Lackowitz. The Bulls went on the power play after the Patriots were called for three consecutive minor penalties. With 4:06 remaining in the second period, Jackson Cantalupo completed the hat trick on a 5 on 3 man advantage to put the Bulls up 6-4.
The Patriots trailed by two at the start of the third frame, but a costly turnover by Ward Melville led to Bobby Trites extending the Bulls lead to three with 14:22 remaining in the third period. The Bulls weren’t done yet. With 7:50 remaining in the frame, R.J. Pfister scored his first career varsity goal to make it an 8-4 game. Lucas Scolaro completed the hat trick to cut the lead to three with 4:05 remaining in the final frame. The Patriots continued to press, but the Bulls were unwilling to allow another four goal lead to slip through their fingers. With 3:17 remaining in the final frame, Jackson Cantalupo scored an empty netter to seal the deal for the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls.
