A Perfect Storm
James Steinberg scored the game winner on the power play to complete the hat trick as the Valley Stream/ Sewanhaka/ Lynbrook Storm defeated the Syosset Braves 6-4. The Storm moved to 3-5 on the season. The Braves dropped to 5-4 in their second consecutive loss. Patrick Donaghy picked up his first career NYIHSHL win for the Storm. Sam Flax made his fifth start of the year for the Braves.
Syosset has been shorthanded since five players were suspended following a 5-4 loss to Massapequa. Of the five, only Robert Engel is eligible to return against the Bellmore Merrick Bulldogs on Tuesday Night at 6:45 PM. Roman Arroyo, Jack Bahrenberg and Brady Lictchenstein were each suspended for four games. David Disque was suspended for six games.
Daniel Disque fired a shot that went went off a defender and into the net to give Syosset a 1-0 lead with 8:52 gone by in the first frame. Disque has scored in three straight games for Syosset. James Steinberg answered back with a backhanded beauty that beat the Braves netminder stick side high with 9:46 gone by in the period. Twenty-five seconds later, Nicky Naumov scored off a tic tac toe play assisted by Billy Algozzini and Aiden Seegal to score the go-ahead goal for the Storm. With 12:56 gone by in the frame, James Steinberg put the Storm up 3-1 on a beautiful wrist shot that came after a turnover by the Braves. Zack Noll deked out the defender before beating Donaghy with a backhanded shot to make it a one score game with 13:59 gone by in the first period.
After Jake Gagliano was assessed a two minute minor for cross-checking, Joe Fanelli fired a slap shot on a shorthanded 2 on 1 to tie the game at three apiece in the second stanza. An elbowing minor that went against VSSL’s Logan Fink put the Braves on the power play. After Syosset failed to capitalize on the odd man advantage, Billy Algozzini received a Hail Mary pass to score on a breakaway to put the Storm back up by one.
James Steinberg buried a rebound on the power play goal with 3:34 remaining to give the Storm a 5-3 lead. After a battle for possession in front of the net, Zack Noll scored from the back door on a power play with 10:25 gone by in the third frame. The Braves had cut the lead to one. Fifty-four seconds later, Nicky Naumov scored from the backdoor off a cross crease pass by Billy Algozzini to give the Storm a 6-4 lead.
