HAUPPAUGE N.Y. (LISN) – Junior Evan LaFata scored the game winner in overtime as the East Islip Chiefs (1-2) won their first game of the season 5-4 over the Ward Melville Patriots (1-2). Junior Dario Baerga picked up his first career varsity win, allowing just two goals at even strength. Senior Luke Tannenbaum allowed five goals against, including two on the power play, in his third straight start.
Senior Kenneth Allen scored his first career varsity goal with 6:11 left in the opening frame to put Ward Melville up 1-0. Allen redirected the puck past Baerga on an off-angle shot.
14 seconds into the 2nd period, Freshman Ryan Bradley scored his first career varsity goal to tie the game. Bradley sniped stick side high from the slot after receiving a drop pass.
Junior Tierney Recenello scored his first career varsity goal on the power play with 11:26 remaining in the second stanza to give East Islip a 2-1 lead. Recenello walked in from the left wing dot and beat Tannenbaum stick side high.
Senior Anthony Cerulli scored his first of the season on the power play with 9:08 remaining in the second frame to make it 2-2. Senior Aidan Ayers went end-to-end before making a feed to the slot for Cerulli, who went top shelf on a backhand shot.
Bradley netted his second of the night with 10:36 left to play in the 3rd period to make it 3-2 East Islip. Bradley came streaking into the zone, walked in and snuck a shot under the arm of Tannenbaum.
Junior Jack Dolson scored his first of the season on the power play with 6:23 remaining to make it a two goal game. Dolson took a shot from the point through traffic to beat the goaltender.
Just under a minute later, Cerulli scored a shorthanded goal to cut the EI lead in half. Cerulli sniped bar down on a two on one.
Senior Daniel Breslin scored with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. Breslin crashed the net from the point and scored on a shot from the doorstep.
LaFata finished the job with 3:27 left in overtime. Dolson came in on a breakaway, was stymied by Tannenbaum, and LaFata buried the rebound to win it.
