Monthie Leads Sachem to 4-2 Victory Over T-Birds

Greg Monthie’s scored the game winner to lift Sachem (13-4-1-1) to a 4-2 comeback victory over the Connetquot Sayville BBP T-Birds (8-11). Shane Kirby started in net for the T-Birds, but was assessed a fighting major that led to Alex Clark taking over in between the pipes. Michael DiGirolamo picked up his seventh win of the season through thirteen starts for Sachem.

Alex DeLeon, Ryan Fleischauer, Andrew Jozwicki and Jack Mercado were all out of the lineup for the T-Birds as Eathan Brdey served the first game of a three game suspension. Richie Bovich, Chris O’Hea and Nyckie Ress did not draw in for Sachem.

Thomas Konkowski fired a shot that was redirected through traffic to put Sachem up 1-0 with 9:45 left in the 1st period. An early power play opportunity led to a chance for Sachem to take a two goal lead, but Kirby kept the puck out of his net with a series of show stopping saves.

Matt Campagnola evened the score with 10:48 remaining in the second stanza. Logan Booth Alum forced a turnover in the slot and found Campagnola all alone in front for a beautiful redirect goal. Ricky Guterwill put the biscuit in the basket with a backhand shot off a rebound opportunity with 8:38 left in the 2nd frame to put the T-Birds up 2-1. Connetquot Sayville BBP went on the power play after their starting netminder, Shane Kirby, and Sachem’s Alp Octu were assessed fighting majors, Colin Kalberer scored a shorthanded goal on a 2 on 1 opportunity to tie the game with 5:04 remaining. Kalberer made a pass to Greg Monthie who found Kalberer on the back door for an easy tap in.

Greg Monthie scored on the power play to put Sachem up 3-2 with 7:01 left in the 3rd period. Joe Capece went coast-to-coast to enter the zone, carried the puck beneath the goal line to Monthie who sniped glove side high from the bottom of the left wing face off dot. Greg Monthie scored the second shorthanded goal of the game for Sachem with 4:30 remaining in the period. The power forward chipped it out of the zone, came in 1 on 1 and toe dragged the defender before going top shelf to give Sachem a 4-2 lead. The T-Birds pulled Clark in favor of an extra tracker, but were unable to find the back of the net before time expired.

Upcoming Schedule

Sachem will square off with the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls on Wednesday February 7th at 9:20 PM. Sachem won their first meeting with the Bulls 5-4 in overtime before tying the Bulls 5-5 in their second meeting of the campaign.

The Connetquot Sayville BBP T-Birds will go toe-to-toe with a West Islip Lions squad battling to make the post-season on Friday February 9th at 10:10 PM. The T-Birds have won their first two outings against the Lions this season.
