Lions Down Patriots

Senior Andrew Mervyak had four assists as the West Islip Lions (3-6) secured a 4-3 victory over the Ward Melville Patriots (2-7)

Senior Nick Perpall scored the game winning goal.

Senior William Shields scored once in a two point effort. 

Sophomore Tyler Sapoff got his second win through five starts in net for Lions. 

Junior Max Blasberg started in goal for the Ward Melville Patriots. 

Senior Anthony Cerulli scored his fourth of the season with 6:04 left in the 1st period to put the Patriots up 1-0. Cerulli sniped glove side high on a one-timer from Senior Aidan Ayers. 

Senior Daniel Breslin netted his second of the season to make it 2-0 with 13:01 remaining in the 2nd period. Breslin picked off a pass at the Lions blue line, cut left-to-right as he walked into the zone, and rifled it past Sapoff

Senior Michael Durso potted his first career varsity goal with 11:00 to go in the second stanza. Mervyak fired a shot from the blue line, Blasberg made a pad save, and Durso tucked the rebound past the outstretched pad of the goaltender. 

Sophomore James Barbieri scored his second of the season, his first on the power play, to tie the game 2-2 with 9:13 left in the 2nd period. Barbieri walked the line and fired a long shot to beat Blasberg

Ayers netted his sixth of the campaign to give the Patriots a 3-2 lead with 8:34 remaining in the second frame. Cerulli made a cross ice feed  in transition for Ayers who buried a one-timer from the back door. 

Shields potted his third of the year, his first on the power play, to tie the game with 5:10 to go in the 2nd period. 

Perpall scored the golden goal with 57 seconds left in the 2nd period. Perpall sniped glove side high to beat Blasberg

The Ward Melville Patriots (2-7) square off against the Connetquot-Sayville T-Birds (2-7) on Monday, November 18 at 8:10 p.m. The Patriots dropped their first game against the T-Birds by a final score of 7-3, but losing might not be an option on Monday night if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The West Islip Lions (3-6) take on the Smithtown-Hauppauge Bulls (8-1) on Monday, November 18 at 9:40 p.m. In their first meeting of the season, the Lions were defeated by the Bulls 9-1.
