HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (LISN) — Sophomore Owen Karpioch netted two goals to lead the Northport/Huntington Tigers (4-7) to a 4-1 victory over the West Islip Lions (3-8).
Senior Joe Boeckmann scored the game-winning goal, while Junior Bowden Rudloff backstopped the Tigers to his second win of the season. Sophomore Tyler Sapoff made his sixth start in net for the Lions.
Karpioch opened the scoring with 8:35 remaining in the 1st period, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Junior Ryan Collins carried the puck into the zone before dropping it to Karpioch, who beat Sapoff glove side.
Boeckmann added the eventual game-winner with 6:25 left in the opening period, going top shelf on a one-timer off a feed from Sophomore Jose Walter. Boeckmann celebrated with an emphatic celly.
Karpioch struck again on the power play with 8:54 remaining in the 2nd period to make it 3-0 Tigers. Sophomore Justin Cahn entered the zone and delivered a perfect backhand pass to a streaking Karpioch, who lifted it over Sapoff’s outstretched pad.
Junior J.T. Caruso capped the scoring for the Tigers with a shorthanded goal at the 43-second mark of regulation. Caruso raced up ice, broke the defender’s ankles with a slick move, and sniped high stick side.
Senior Chris Castellano tallied his first career varsity goal for the Lions on the power play with 13 seconds left in the game, cutting the deficit to 4-1. Senior Andrew Mervyak made a backhand pass from beneath the goal line, setting up Castellano for a tap-in from the doorstep.
