Friars Defeat Lions 8-2

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (LISN)Senior Brody O’Doherty tallied two goals and an assist to power the St. Anthony’s Friars (13-0) to an 8-2 victory over the West Islip Lions (3-10).

Junior Anthony Cutalo had two goals for St. Anthony’s

Senior Cormac Terry, the Friars captain, netted a power play marker and added an assist.

Senior Nick Tempone picked up his fourth career varsity win in as many starts for St. Anthony’s.

Sophomore Tyler Sapoff was between the pipes for West Islip in his seventh start of the season.

O’Doherty opened the scoring with 7:20 remaining in the 1st period to give St. Anthony’s an early 1-0 lead.

O’Doherty scored his eighth of the season with 4:19 left in the opening stanza to double the Friars lead.

With 1:49 left in the 1st period, Junior Nicholas Busa potted his sixth of the season, the eventual game winning goal.

Less than 30 seconds later, Senior Daniel Cevallos ripped a shot off the pipe that bounced off the back of Sapoff, landed in the blue paint, and Senior James Aspromonti buried the rebound for his ninth of the campaign to make it 4-0.

West Islip got on the board early in the 2nd period when Senior William Shields scored his fifth of the season with 13:53 remaining, assisted by Sophomore James Barbieri, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

St. Anthony’s responded quickly as Cutalo buried a goal off a drop pass from Terry at the 11:40 mark of the middle frame, extending the lead to 5-1.

Barbieri struck back for West Islip, scoring his third of the season with 9:20 left in the 2nd period to make it 5-2.

The Friars capitalized on a pair penalties taken by West Islip in the 2nd period.

Sirel scored his 14th of the season and first on the power play goal with 7:30 remaining in the middle frame after WI Senior Anthony Isopo was assessed a tripping minor.

Terry scored his first of the season, a power play goal, at 3:47 mark of the second stanza after Isopo was sent to the box for cross-checking.

In the final frame, Cutalo added his second of the night and 10th of the season with 2:00 remaining in the 3rd period to make it 8-2.

The undefeated St. Anthony’s Friars (13-0) kick off the New Year against the Ward Melville Patriots (4-8) on Monday, January 6 at 8:10 pm. The Friars blanked the Patriots 6-0 on Monday, October 14.

The West Islip Lions (3-10) face off against the Connetquot Sayville T-Birds (2-11) on Wednesday, December 18 to close out the calendar year. The Lions won their first meeting against the T-Birds on Wednesday, October 16 by a final score of 4-3 and are all but certain to make the playoffs if they win this Wednesday.
