Chiefs Charge Past Bulls

Thomas Ivers tallied four points as Ryan Anatra scored the game winning goal to lift East Islip Chiefs (13-1-2) to a 5-3 victory over the Smithtown Hauppauge Bulls (8-4-3-1). Brody Dickson backstopped the Chiefs to his seventh win of the season through eight starts and ten games played. Patrick Ryan lost for the first time since October 8th in the Bulls netminder’s ninth start and tenth appearance of the season.

A roughing minor that was assessed to Smithtown Hauppauge defenseman R.J. Pfister put the Bulls on the penalty kill with 8:29 remaining in the 1st period. Thomas Ivers made the Bulls pay on the power play to give the East Islip Chiefs their first lead of the night with 6:55 remaining in the first frame. Ivers broke up an attempted clear by the Bulls at the blue line, walked into the slot and fired a shot through a defender to beat Ryan glove side high. The Chiefs went back on the power play after Smithtown Hauppauge’s Patrick Malone was called for a roughing minor with 3:49 remaining in the period. Anthony Marazzito scored the power play goal with 1:25 gone by on the penalty and 2:04 remaining in the period. Marazzito cashed in on a one-timer from the doorstep off a beautiful backhand pass by Thomas Ivers. Fourteen seconds later the Bulls cut the lead to one courtesy of a bottle rocket by Gavin Bareham. Brendan Landrigan made a pass that went off the left wing wall to Bareham who fired a one-timer to beat Dickson blocker side high. The Bulls nearly tied the game on a rebound opportunity for Bobby Trites, but Bryan Slattery was called for hooking while attempting to break up the play with 46 seconds remaining in the 1st period.

Sixteen seconds into the second stanza Gavin Bareham potted a power play goal to tie the game at two. The Bulls blue liner, Adam Lackowitz, entered the zone and feathered one to Bareham who fired a shot that slipped under the arm of a sliding Dickson. Thomas Ivers scored his second of the night to put the Chiefs back up by one with 13:11 remaining in the second frame. Ryan Anatra threaded the needle to a cutting Ivers, who slipped behind the Bulls defense and went going backhand-forehand to beat Ryan. A roughing minor that went against East Islip’s Evan LaFata sent Smithtown Hauppauge back to the power play. Bulls captain Bobby Trites netted the equalizer on the man advantage with 6:47 remaining in the 2nd period. Gavin Bareham made a pass towards the top of the left wing faceoff circle where Trites stepped into a one timer that beat a sliding Dickson top shelf. Ryan Anatra scored the game winning goal with 1:04 remaining. Thomas Ivers won a puck battle in the slot and Ryan Anatra pounced on it to fire a quick shot bar down to give the Chiefs the 4-3 lead. 

A tripping penalty that went against Shane Reidy put the Bulls on the penalty kill with 13:00 remaining in the 3rd period. Luke LaFata scored the insurance goal to extend the Chiefs lead to 5-3 with 6:55 remaining in the final frame. Luke LaFata forced a turnover, his brother Evan LaFata collected the loose puck and fired a shot that was turned aside by the left pad of Ryan. Luke LaFata pounced on the rebound, cut across the slot and fired a backhanded shot that went just past the outstretched par of the Bulls netminder. Bobby Trites was assessed a minor penalty for slashing with twenty-five seconds remaining in regulation as the Chiefs secured the 5-3 win.

Upcoming Schedule

The East Islip Chiefs will be back in action against the Northport Huntington Tigers at the Rinx on Monday January 24th at 8:10 PM. In their first meeting of the campaign, the Chiefs defeated the Tigers 11-0.

The Bulls will look to bounce back into the win column at the Rinx on Wednesday January 24th at 9:20 PM. In their first meeting of the season, the T-Birds defeated the Bulls 2-1.
