Thomas Ivers’s five point performance powered the East Islip Chiefs (14-1-2) a 7-3 victory over the Northport Huntington Tigers (7-10). Corey McGovern picked up his sixth win of the season for the Chiefs. Connor King made his ninth start of the campaign for the Tigers. Defenseman Chris Lawlor and center Evan LaFata did not draw in for the East Islip Chiefs in the win. Emmet Gilliar was recalled from EI’s Junior Varsity squad for the second time this season. The blue liner is one of four JV players including Peter Marazzito, Tierny Recenello and Niko Stavropoulos to draw in at the Varsity level this season. The Northport Huntington Tigers were without SCHSHL All-Star Sean Tittel, who is tied for the team lead in all major scoring statistics. Tigers Center Ryan Colapinto, who is averaging a point per game, was also out of the lineup.

Thomas Ivers went backhand-forehand on a shorthanded breakaway to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with 3:26 remaining in the 1st period. Anthony Pepe was credited with the lone assist on the play.

Liam Godbout extended the Chiefs lead to two on a shot from the slot with 12:27 left in the second stanza. Thomas Ivers went coast-to-coast to create a 2 on 1 advantage and threaded the needle to Alex Carino who cashed in to put the Chiefs up 3-0 with 6:52 remaining in the second frame. James Ionadis scored his first career varsity goal on a shot from the blue line to make it a two score game with 3:02 left in the 2nd period. Luke LaFata sniped top shelf on a shot from the slot off a beautiful backhand pass from Thomas Ivers to put the Chiefs up 4-1 with 17 seconds remaining in the period.

Jack McGary pinched to keep the puck in the Tigers zone, walked in from the right corner and scored on a shot from right in front of the blue paint to put the Chiefs up by four with 7:47 left in regulation. Joe Boeckmann pulled off a no-look, spin-o-rama backhand pass to Ryan Collins who scored on a shot from the point to make it 5-2 with 2:26 remaining in the final frame. J.T. Caruso came in 1 on 1, made a beautiful toe drag to create time and space as the Tigers All-Star fired a backhand shot across his body that went top shelf to make it a two goal game with 1:34 remaining in the 3rd period. The Tigers called timeout, but it was the Chiefs that scored off the ensuing draw. Ryan Anatra won the draw forward to create a zone entry and feathered it over to Thomas Ivers. The league’s leader in assists made a backhand pass to Anthony Pepe who beat the netminder from the back door with 1:27 remaining in the period. Thomas Ivers sealed the deal with an empty netter that came with 32 seconds left in regulation.

Upcoming Schedule

The East Islip Chiefs will square off with Sachem on Wednesday January 24th at 7:50 PM. In their first meeting of the season Anthony Pepe scored the game winning goal as EI came back to win a 5-4. Sachem was without All-Star defenseman Sean Walsh and their Captain Thomas Konkowski, who were suspended for the match. East Islip’s Brody Dickson, Thomas Ivers, Anthony Pepe and Ryan Anatra did not enter the game until the start of the second stanza due to a scheduling conflict resulting from a travel game for a Freeport Arrows U18 Triple A squad that plays in the Tier One Hockey Federation. Sachem’s Colin Kalberer and Thomas Konkowski are also rostered by the Arrows, which lead to Kalberer arriving late as well.

The Northport Huntington Tigers will take on the Connetquot Sayville BBP T-Birds on Sunday January 28th at 7:50 PM. The T-Birds beat the Tigers 7-1 earlier in the season, but Sean Tittel, James Ionadis, Ryan Colapinto and Michael Agafonov were all out of the lineup in the loss.
