Friars Pour ‘Em On Late In Shutout Victory

Tommy Azzariti and Brody O’Doherty potted two goals apiece as T.J. Ulmschneider led the St. Anthony’s Friars (9-5-1) to a 6-0 shutout victory over Sachem (11-3-1). Azzariti now leads all St. Anthony’s Friars with ten goals on the season and is ranked second on the team points with fifteen. O’Doherty’s first career SCHSHL Varsity multi-goal game gives the blue liner four goals in St. Anthony’s last five games. Ulmschneider’s shutout victory leaves the St. Anthony’s netminder tied with East Islip’s Brody Dickson for the league lead in shutouts this season. 

Captain Thomas Konkowski, who has scored a league leading 29 goals with six hat tricks on the season, did not draw in to the lineup as Sachem was shutout for their first time this season, in their largest margin of defeat to date. St. Anthony’s winger Anthony Scorcia remains out of the lineup with an upper body injury.  

Sachem starter Michael DiGirolamo kept the game scoreless until late in the 2nd period when the Friars scored two power play goals to blow the game wide open. St. Anthony’s went three for five on the power play with three goals at even strength. Tommy Azzariti scored two of the Friars three power play goals and picked up the lone assist on the second power play goal of the game. Azzariti is now tied for the team lead in power play points with Brady Monteleone, who has five on the campaign. Gerard Nealon had a goal and an assist to hold the team lead in points with seventeen to date. James Aspromonti has now garnered two assists in consecutive contests. Brady Monteleone collected two assists in the St. Anthony’s fifth multi-point performance of the campaign.

Tommy Azzariti buried a rebound on the power play to score the eventual game winner with 3:21 remaining in the second stanza. The Friars jumped out to a 2-0 lead off a power play goal by Brody O’Doherty with seven seconds remaining in the frame. 

The Friars scored three goals in a span of one minute and thirty six seconds in the third period. Gerard Nealon scored the first even strength goal of the game on a two on one opportunity with 10:08 remaining in the frame. Brody O’Doherty scored his second goal of the game on a two on one with 9:02 remaining in the 3rd period. Thirty seconds later Ryan Leon buried a rebound to extend the Friars lead to 5-0. Tommy Azzariti scored his second power play goal of the game with 1:07 remaining in regulation.

Upcoming Schedule

Sachem looks to bounce back into the win column against the Ward Melville Patriots on Wednesday January 10 at 9:20 PM. When these teams last met Sachem scored six third period goals in a 9-2 victory. 

The St. Anthony’s Friars will be back in action on Monday, January 15th at 8:10 PM against the West Islip Lions. In their first meeting of the season St. Anthony’s held on to win 5-4 after the Lions scored three unanswered 3rd period goals.
