Longwood Freshman White dominated West Islip Freshman Blue 6-1 on Monday night at South rink, extending the Lions’ strong season while dealing another blow to West Islip’s struggling campaign. The victory improved Longwood to 11-7 overall and kept them firmly positioned for a playoff push, while West Islip fell to 4-14 and extended their losing streak to seven games.

John Lechmanski and Brewer Spinella led the offensive charge for Longwood, each recording two goals in a balanced attack that never allowed West Islip to gain momentum. Lechmanski opened the scoring at 9:29 of the first period on an even-strength strike assisted by Spinella, then added the game-winner on a power play at 6:45 with help from Cesar Aravena. The early 2-0 lead set the tone for what would become a lopsided affair, as Longwood controlled play throughout the opening frame despite accumulating three minor penalties.

The second period belonged to Spinella and Peter O’Sullivan, who showcased Longwood’s dangerous special teams play with a pair of short-handed goals. Spinella struck first at 14:41 while killing a penalty, with Aravena collecting his second assist of the night. He added another goal just over a minute later at even strength, assisted by Riley Parrales, to push the lead to 4-0. O’Sullivan then delivered the highlight of the game with a spectacular short-handed tally at 8:43, scoring unassisted while West Islip held a man advantage. The goal effectively ended any hopes of a West Islip comeback and left the home team deflated heading into the final period.

The physical intensity escalated significantly throughout the contest, with 15 total penalties assessed as frustration boiled over for the struggling West Islip squad. Multiple scrums broke out with players abandoning play to go after each other, and at one point three players from each team found themselves in penalty boxes simultaneously. Matthew Minervini led West Islip in penalty minutes with 14, while Brian Dillon paced Longwood with 10. The chippy play reflected West Islip’s mounting frustration during their extended losing skid, which now includes a 10-1 loss to St. Anthony’s among recent setbacks.

West Islip managed to break Malcolm Sherman’s shutout bid early in the third period when Jake Aniano scored at 3:15, assisted by Luke Galante. However, O’Sullivan answered back just over a minute later with his second goal of the night to restore Longwood’s commanding lead. Sherman, who entered the game with a 2.68 GAA and perfect 4-0 record, made several key saves to preserve the victory and improve to 5-0 on the season.

The win marked Longwood’s second dominant victory over West Islip this season, following an 11-2 triumph in their November meeting. With Aravena continuing his prolific season that has seen him accumulate 26 goals and 33 points in just 13 games, Longwood appears well-positioned for the playoffs. Meanwhile, West Islip faces an uphill battle to finish the season on a positive note with just one game remaining against KPC, as they look to snap out of their current six-game skid and build momentum for next season.
