The University of New Haven Chargers turned Northford Ice Pavilion into an offensive showcase Saturday night, overwhelming the University of Maine 9-6 in a wild ACHA Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference clash that featured 15 total goals and two spectacular hat tricks. Giancarlo Montanaro and Anthony Rosa each found the back of the net four times, leading a balanced New Haven attack that saw nine different players register at least one point in the victory.

Montanaro’s four-goal explosion was particularly remarkable given the sophomore forward had managed just one goal and two assists in his first two games of the season entering Saturday’s contest. His eruption helped anchor a first line that terrorized Maine’s defense all evening, while Rosa continued his torrid pace with his second hat trick of the campaign. The senior sniper entered the game with 17 goals and 28 assists in 18 games, and his four-goal performance further solidified his status as one of the ECHC’s premier offensive threats.

The Chargers’ offensive clinic was orchestrated by a pair of six-point performances from Luca Minopoli and Michael Madera, who combined for 12 assists between them. Minopoli doubled his season point total with two goals and four helpers, while Madera continued his impressive campaign by dishing out six assists to extend his team-leading point streak. The senior playmaker entered the contest with 19 goals and 15 assists in 15 games, and his vision and passing ability were on full display throughout the high-scoring affair.

Despite allowing nine goals, New Haven goaltender Logan Toussaint faced a barrage of 116 shots from Maine, making 104 saves for a .897 save percentage in what became a test of endurance as much as skill. The victory improved New Haven to 9-6 overall and provided crucial momentum in their ECHC campaign, as the Chargers demonstrated their explosive offensive potential in one of the season’s most entertaining contests.
