Rutgers University pulled off a stunning upset Saturday night at ProSkate, dismantling previously red-hot Ramapo College 6-1 in a MCHC clash that few saw coming. The Scarlet Knights, who entered the game with a modest 3-6 record, completely overwhelmed a Roadrunners squad that had won 12 of their first 15 games this season.
The upset was even more impressive considering Ramapo’s recent dominance in this matchup, having edged Rutgers 4-3 in their September meeting. This time, however, the Scarlet Knights controlled the action from start to finish, outshooting Ramapo 54-24 in a relentless offensive barrage that left the visitors scrambling for answers.
Timothy Wanvig provided Ramapo’s lone bright spot, scoring his first goal of the season after entering the game with just three assists in three appearances. Brian Atwell and Tommy Korpics each added assists, with Atwell extending his strong season totals and Korpics contributing to the offense despite the lopsided result. However, the Roadrunners’ offense, which had been clicking with Korpics averaging nearly three points per game entering Saturday, was largely neutralized by Rutgers’ defensive pressure.
The goaltending battle told the story of the night, as Ramapo was forced to use both Talon Muscolino and Alec Rittenhouse in net. Muscolino struggled early, allowing 13 goals on 23 shots for a .435 save percentage, while Rittenhouse provided stability in relief with 28 saves on 31 shots (.903 save percentage). The loss drops Ramapo to 12-4 overall and serves as a humbling reminder that no game is a given in the competitive MCHC, while Rutgers improves to 4-6 with their most impressive victory of the season.
