Running Away With The Tie
In their first meeting of the 2023-2024 NYIHSHL season, the Garden City Wings tied the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks 3-3. The Seahawks moved to 4-4-1 on the year. The Wings moved to 8-1-1 on the campaign. Jake Panetta made 25 stops in another stellar performance for the Seahawks. P.J. Tursi made thirty saves on the night for the Wings. The Wings would start overtime on the power play, but play returned to 3 on 3 with a running clock at the first stoppage after the penalty expired. Neither the Seahawks nor the Wings would score before time ran out.
With 2:16 gone by in the first frame, Sean Ecker opened the scoring on a shot from the slot to put the Seahawks up 1-0. Andrew Mazzei buried a rebound on the power play to extend the Cold Spring Harbor lead to two. At the start of the second stanza, Jeremi Dziedzic went forehand-backhand on the breakaway to beat the Seahawks netminder top shelf to tie the game. Seahawks winger Andrew Mazzei was assessed a ten minute misconduct with 8:53 gone by in the second frame. After being outshot 11-5 in the first period, the Wings narrowly outshot the Seahawks 9-8.
With :44 gone by in the third frame, Luke Padula scored his first career NYIHSHL varsity goal on a shot that beat Panetta glove side to give the Wings their first and only lead of the night. Seven minutes later, Mack Baxter redirected a shot by Ryan McGloin past Tursi to tie the game at 3-3. A roughing penalty that went against Cold Spring Harbor Captain, Trevor Steele, gave the wings a 4 on 3 opportunity in overtime. Garden City generated several scoring chances on the man advantage, but Jake Panetta stonewalled the Wings at every turn. The Seahawks came firing back at 3 on 3, but time expired before either squad could find the back of the net.
