Cam Minardi put on an offensive clinic Monday night at North rink, recording his first hat trick of the season while tacking on two more goals for a spectacular five-goal performance that powered Southampton Freshman to a dominant 10-1 victory over Connetquot Sayville BBP Freshman Red. The junior sensation, who entered the contest with 28 goals in 13 games, needed just over eight minutes to open the scoring and never looked back, capping his historic night with back-to-back tallies in the final 2:20 of the third period.
Southampton (11-6) turned what figured to be a competitive SCHSHL matchup into a rout early, racing to a 3-0 first-period lead behind Minardi‘s first two goals and Aidan Dangelo‘s game-winner at 6:19. The Mariners’ offensive explosion continued in the second period with four unanswered goals, including strikes from Kevin Kretz, Declan McNamee, Minardi’s third of the night, and Martin Osullivan. McNamee, who entered with 14 goals in 10 games, contributed three points on the night with a goal and two assists.
Connetquot Sayville (9-10) managed just one goal in response, with Nicholas Fielding breaking up the shutout bid at 6:33 of the third period on assists from Jaxon Volpe. But Southampton answered immediately, as Osullivan scored his second goal of the game just 29 seconds later to restore the nine-goal cushion. Minardi then punctuated his five-point masterpiece with goals at 2:20 and 1:05, giving him his first career five-goal game and moving his season totals to an eye-popping 33 goals through 14 contests.
The victory marked Southampton’s second win over Connetquot Sayville this season, having edged them 4-3 in November. Osullivan added four points with two goals and two assists, while goaltender Scott Armusewicz III and Leontios Teryazos combined to limit the visitors to minimal scoring chances in the blowout win.
