St. Anthony’s (VR) improved to 5-0 on the season with a dominant 6-0 shutout of Ward Melville (VR) on Monday at The Rinx – North Rink, exploding for five goals in the third period after a tight opening two frames. Brody O’Doherty opened the scoring just 4:26 into the first period on a feed from Ryan Leon, and that lone goal held up as St. Anthony’s carried a slim 1-0 lead into the third.
The floodgates opened in the final period. Zack Sirel scored three times in a span of just over 10 minutes, notching goals at 11:53, 2:35, and 1:27 to complete a hat trick, with Mauricio Carrasco Jr. picking up assists on his final two tallies. Cristian Buttacavoli and Thomas Azzariti also found the net in the third, with Buttacavoli’s goal set up by William Bisogno and O’Doherty, and Azzariti’s coming off assists from Anthony Scorcia and James Schendorf.
Ward Melville goaltender Maxwell Blasberg took the loss, allowing six goals as his team dropped to 1-4 on the year. The shutout marked the third meeting between these two SCHSHL clubs this season, with St. Anthony’s having already claimed wins of 6-1 and 8-2 in the previous two matchups. Ethan Tam picked up a penalty for Ward Melville in the third period, one of just three infractions called in the contest.
With the season winding down and only a handful of games remaining for both programs, St. Anthony’s continues to look like one of the league’s top contenders while Ward Melville will need a strong finish to turn its season around.
