William Trapani scored three goals and added an assist, and Sachem beat Ward Melville 10-1 on Monday night at The Rinx – South Rink in the opening game of the Suffolk County High School Hockey League varsity season. Sachem scored three times in the first period and five more in the third, and seven of its skaters finished with multiple points.
Sachem took control early. Trapani opened the scoring with 12:51 left in the first period on a pretty finish set up by Anthony Seguna. Dylan Simone followed with 8:52 remaining, with Christopher Seguna assisting, and John Moody made it 3-0 at 7:35 off a feed from Ryan Rutigliano. Ward Melville, which is working in a largely revamped roster of newcomers and JV call-ups, called a timeout late in the period to regroup.
Ward Melville’s best moment came on the power play midway through the second. Blake Febbraro took the puck off the boards and scored unassisted with 8:53 left, his first career varsity goal, to make it 3-1. Sachem quickly restored the three-goal margin when Roman Cruz scored with 5:25 left, assisted by Tyler Anderson. Anthony Seguna added a goal at 2:20 off assists from Trapani and Jack Mitchell to make it 5-1 heading into the third.
Sachem pulled away in the final period. Moody scored his second goal, unassisted, with 14:17 left. Anderson added a goal at 12:40, and Tyler Paden made it 8-1 at 11:08. Trapani then scored twice, both times set up by Simone, the second with eight seconds left to complete his hat trick. Simone finished with a goal and two assists, while Moody, Anderson, Anthony Seguna, Christopher Seguna and Mitchell each had two points. Rutigliano, Justin Hunter, Christopher Seguna and Paden all recorded their first varsity points. Michael Walsh earned the win in net for Sachem, allowing one goal.
For Ward Melville, Andrew Febbraro made his varsity debut in goal and stayed with it through the full game, taking the loss with 10 goals allowed. Ward Melville drew both penalties called in the game, both against Sachem, and converted on the power play. Sachem opens at 1-0-0-0, and Ward Melville starts at 0-1-0-0 as it continues building chemistry with a new-look lineup.
