The Sachem 2026-27 Season Preview

By LI Sports Network Staff · September 7, 2026 · 9 min read

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (LISN) — Sachem won 16 games last season and did not win any of them narrowly. The closest was 5-2 against Northport/Huntington on Nov. 2. Every other win came by four goals or more, and seven of them came by eight or more.

They opened 4-0 and outscored those four opponents 39-5. They finished with five straight: 6-2 over St. Anthony’s, 11-0, 6-2, 9-2, 8-0 between Jan. 5 and Feb. 1, 40 goals to six. Two of those five were answers: Sachem had lost to St. Anthony’s in October and to East Islip in November, and they beat both in the rematches, St. Anthony’s on Jan. 5 and East Islip 9-2 on Jan. 18. The only back-to-back losses all year came in October.

Then Feb. 2, the quarterfinal against Kings Park/Commack, and a 5-4 overtime game. Roman Cruz scored twice in the second period, one of them short-handed. Tyler Anderson scored in the third. Three of Sachem’s four goals that night came from players who are on this year’s roster. That is the bridge from last season into this one.

Last season

Sixteen wins, four losses, second place. Sachem scored 158 goals, tied with Smithtown/Hauppauge for the most in the division, and allowed 50, the third-fewest. That is a plus-108 season, and it was the third winning season in a row: 13-6-1 in 2023-24, 15-5 in 2024-25, 16-4 last year. The win total has gone up each time.

The scoring was spread out and it was constant, eight games in double figures, among them 14-2 over Middle Country in December and 12-5 over Ward Melville in November. At the other end they held opponents to two goals or fewer in 12 of the 20 regular-season games and to one or none in six. Three of those were shutouts: 10-0 over West Islip on Sept. 22, 11-0 over Patchogue-Medford on Jan. 7 and 8-0 over Ward Melville on Feb. 1.

The oddest number of the season is a special-teams one. Sachem scored 12 short-handed goals and 11 on the power play, more with a man in the box than with a man in it on the other side. Seven of those 12 short-handed goals were scored by players who are back this season. On Feb. 1 against Ward Melville they scored three of them in the same game.

The four losses were two to the team that finished first and one each to the teams that finished third and fourth, and Sachem answered both of those two in January. The season ended on Feb. 2 against Kings Park/Commack, 5-4 in overtime, ten weeks after Sachem had beaten the same team 8-1.

What leaves is the top of the sheet. Cameron Kalberer scored 31 goals and 60 points, Chase Saunders 21 and 35, James Drago 20 assists and 28 points, Joseph Wandling 19 points. Tyler Loret had 16 assists from the blue line in all 21 games. Logan Stoltenborg, Caiden Marcus, Nyckie Ress, Jason Gillen, Andrew Gandolfo and Peyton Wilson are not on this year’s sheet, and neither are the three goaltenders. That is 91 of the 162 goals Sachem scored across the full 21 games. The other 71 are back, and five of the 10 leading scorers with them.

William Trapani

Trapani played all 21 games and scored 21 goals, a goal a game, with 15 assists for 36 points. Among the players still here that is the most goals and the most points. Christian Pena is next at 26. On the full team sheet last season he was second in points behind Kalberer and tied with Saunders for second in goals. He scored in 13 of his 21 games, had six two-goal nights, and one night with three.

That one was Feb. 1 against Ward Melville, an 8-0 win. He scored on the power play with 8:25 left in the first, then twice in the third, with 4:10 and 2:50 to go. It was the same game Sachem scored three times short-handed.

His biggest night for points came against Northport/Huntington on Jan. 14, a 6-2 win: a goal with 3:53 left in the first that stood as the winner, and four assists around it. Four days later he put two power-play goals past East Islip in the 9-2, both set up by Loret, with 9:37 and 3:33 left in the second. He also had two goals and two assists against Connetquot/Sayville on Dec. 15.

He wears No. 83 and 2026-27 is his third season in the varsity room. He came through the Sachem freshman level in 2023-24 and played varsity and junior varsity both in 2024-25.

The forwards

Christian Pena (F, 11-15—26) played 20 games and scored the winner in the 5-2 over Northport/Huntington on Nov. 2, with 10 minutes left in the second period of Sachem’s closest win of the year. He scored twice against Middle Country on Dec. 10. He is in his third varsity season, after the junior varsity in 2023-24.

Anthony Seguna (F, 8-14—22) last season had 22 points in 19 games were third among the players still here, and two of his eight goals came short-handed, one against Patchogue-Medford in October and one in the third period of the 8-0 over Ward Melville. He added a power-play goal in the 6-2 over St. Anthony’s on Jan. 5 and set up Anderson’s goal in the quarterfinal. He was on the junior varsity in 2024-25 and came up to the varsity last season.

Tyler Anderson (F, 7-10—17) scored the winner in the 10-0 over West Islip on Sept. 22 and scored the last Sachem goal of the season, with 11:20 left in the third of the quarterfinal, from Anthony Seguna and Dylan Simone. He played 19 games without taking a penalty minute.

Roman Cruz (F, 7-9—16) is the short-handed one. Three of his seven goals came a man down: against Smithtown/Hauppauge on Oct. 13, against St. Anthony’s on Oct. 20, and unassisted in the second period of the quarterfinal. He also scored the winner in the 9-2 over East Islip on Jan. 18. He played the freshman level in 2023-24 and both varsity and junior varsity in 2024-25.

Dylan Simone (F, 6-9—15) scored twice in the 11-0 over Patchogue-Medford on Jan. 7 and added a first-period goal against St. Anthony’s on Jan. 5, from Anderson and Pena, in the win that started the closing run. He is in his third varsity season.

Justin Horrmann (F, 8-3—11) played defense last season and moves to forward this one, which will be a shorter trip for him than for most, because he scored eight goals from the blue line. Three came in one night, the 12-5 over Ward Melville on Nov. 12: two in the second period from Kalberer, and an unassisted one with 17 seconds left in the game. He scored short-handed with three seconds left in the second period against Middle Country on Dec. 10, and his goal in the first period on Jan. 7 was the winner in the 11-0 over Patchogue-Medford. He has played varsity, junior varsity and the freshman level for Sachem, the varsity in each of the last two seasons.

Five forwards come up from the junior varsity, and between them they have most of a decade in the program. Zachary Hesse (F) played the freshman level in 2023-24 and the last two seasons on the junior varsity. So did Ryan Rutigliano (F). Justin Hunter (F) and Tyler Paden (F) both started at the developmental level in 2023-24 and have spent the two seasons since on the junior varsity. Christopher Seguna (F) was on the junior varsity last season and takes No. 82, the number Anthony Seguna wore on the varsity. Hesse had 17 goals and 25 points in 16 junior varsity games last season, after 11-4—15 in 21 games in 2024-25 and 9-7—16 in 23 at the freshman level in 2023-24. Rutigliano had 8-6—14 in 21 games, Paden 6-7—13 in 18, Hunter 6-5—11 in 17 and Christopher Seguna 4-7—11 in 16.

Defense

John Moody (D, 2-17—19) played all 21 games, one of four Sachem skaters who did, and his 17 assists were third on the team and the most of any Sachem defenseman. He plays a physical game, with 24 penalty minutes. He was on the junior varsity in 2024-25 and came up to the varsity last season.

Matthew Lengyel Jr. (D, 1-5—6) played 17 games and scored in the win over Ward Melville on Nov. 12. It was his second varsity season. He played 17 games on the blue line in 2024-25 too, after 9-3—12 in 17 games at the freshman level in 2023-24.

Jack Mitchell (D) fills out the group from below: 3-9—12 in 22 games at the freshman level in 2023-24, 13-6—19 in 17 games there in 2024-25, then the junior varsity last year. Hunter Di Peri (D) came through the Sachem freshman level in 2023-24, where he had 8-7—15 in 22 games.

In goal

Sachem ran two goaltenders most nights and it worked. Michael DiGirolamo appeared in 20 of the 21 games and started 14 of them; Anthony Mare appeared in 19 and started seven; Giovanni Mazzara dressed for two. Fifty goals against in 20 regular-season games was the third-lowest total in the division, and three games finished with nothing on the other side of the sheet. None of the three goaltenders is on the 2026-27 filing.

Michael Walsh (G) comes up off three straight seasons in the Sachem junior varsity net: 12 starts in 2023-24, 13 in 2024-25 and 17 of the junior varsity’s 22 games last season. Three winters of games at his own level is a real apprenticeship, and very little about a full season will be new to him.

Logan Martinez (G) comes up with him, off a junior varsity season in which he took a start and gave up four goals across his appearances. Two goaltenders who have been playing all along get the turn, and they get it behind a group that gave up 50 goals in 20 games last season.

The staff, and what’s next

George Alamia is the head coach, with Philip Trocchio and Kevin McGuire on the staff and Theresa Saunders as manager.

Sachem opens Sept. 14 against Ward Melville and closes Jan. 25 against Kings Park/Commack, the team that ended last season in overtime. Two of last season’s opponents, Patchogue-Medford and Middle Country, are gone from the varsity division, and Eastport South Manor, Longwood and Gaels Ice Hockey come in to make it 12 teams. The quarterfinals are Feb. 1, the semifinals Feb. 3 and the final a best-of-three Feb. 5-10. Every Sachem varsity game streamed on the LI Sports Network YouTube channel last season, all 21 of them, and will again this year. The team page and the division standings update through the season.

Seventy-one of last season’s 162 goals are back, along with five of the 10 leading scorers. The net is new and so are nine of the 18 names, every one of them from inside the program. Sachem has won 13, then 15, then 16 games in three seasons, and last season they scored as many goals as anyone in the division; the next couple of months are about how quickly Walsh and Martinez settle in behind a group that already knows how it wants to play.

Games to circle

Mon., Sept. 28: St. Anthony’s. St. Anthony’s went on to win the county final and the Long Island Championship, and Sachem was one of only three teams to beat them in the regular season, a 6-2 answer after dropping the October meeting. The champion comes back in the fourth game of the year.

Wed., Nov. 18: Gaels Ice Hockey. Gaels Ice Hockey is playing its first varsity season, one of three teams new to the division, and this is the first time Sachem has met them. There is no book on it yet, for either side.

Fri., Jan. 15: Smithtown/Hauppauge. Smithtown/Hauppauge finished first at 18-2 and was the only team to beat Sachem twice last season, two of Sachem’s four losses. The two tied for the most goals in the division, 158 apiece, and finished one-two in the standings.

Mon., Jan. 25: Kings Park/Commack. The season closes against the team that ended the last one: Kings Park/Commack won the quarterfinal 5-4 in overtime on Feb. 2, ten weeks after Sachem had beaten them 8-1. Three of Sachem’s four goals that night came from players who are back this year.
