The Steamfitters improved to 2-0 with a lopsided 9-2 victory over DSNY Hockey at Northwell Health Ice Center on Saturday, building on their unbeaten start to the season. Zach Josepher led the offensive onslaught with two goals and an assist, adding to a season that already included a three-point performance in the team’s opener. DSNY Hockey, now 0-2, got both of its goals from McGrath, who scored in each of the final two periods with Panettiere assisting on both.
The Steamfitters wasted little time building a cushion, scoring three times in the first period. Kenny Wright’s goal at 8:31, assisted by Josepher, proved to be the game-winner, coming just 15 seconds after Josepher had opened his own scoring account with helper from Anthony Scoca. Tommy Condon capped the period’s scoring with a goal at 13:15 off a Wright assist, giving Condon two points on the night after entering the game with a pair of goals in the season opener.
The second period turned into a showcase for the Steamfitters’ depth. Josepher struck again on a short-handed goal at 17:26, assisted by Condon and Jack Johnson, before McGrath got DSNY on the board at 7:24. The Steamfitters answered with unassisted goals from Kevin Wright and Mike Kirk in quick succession, and Kevin Barry added another with assists from Johnson and Willie Shields to push the lead to 7-1 heading into the third.
DSNY’s McGrath added a second goal late in the third period, again assisted by Panettiere, but the Steamfitters had already put the outcome out of reach. Joey Mione and Johnson each factored into the scoring during the final frame, with Mione’s goal assisted by Dylan Kirsch and Barry, and Johnson finishing off the scoring with Mione picking up the helper. Jerry Gioia earned the win in goal for the Steamfitters, allowing two goals.
The Steamfitters will look to carry their offensive balance into their next matchup, while DSNY Hockey will search for answers after dropping to 0-2 on the season.
