St. Anthony’s (VR) improved to 12-0 on the season with an 8-2 victory over West Islip (VR) on Sunday at The Rinx – North Rink, extending its unbeaten start to the year. The result mirrored an earlier meeting between the two clubs, as St. Anthony’s again asserted control early and never let go.
Brody O’Doherty set the tone with two unassisted goals in the first period, opening the scoring at 7:20 and adding another at 4:19. Nicholas Busa made it 3-0 at 1:49 off an assist from O’Doherty, and James Aspromonti capped a four-goal first period with a goal at 1:23 assisted by Daniel Cevallos. West Islip found itself in an immediate 4-0 hole before the game was ten minutes old.
West Islip answered in the second period behind William Shields, who scored on an assist from James Barbieri at 13:53, and Barbieri followed with an unassisted goal of his own at 9:20 to briefly cut into the deficit. But St. Anthony’s countered with three more goals in the frame, including a power-play strike from Zack Sirel and another power-play goal from Cormac Terry, while Anthony Cutalo also found the net at even strength. Cutalo added his second of the game in the third period at 2:00, closing out the scoring at 8-2.
Barbieri finished with a goal and an assist for West Islip, while Shields also scored and picked up 12 penalty minutes in the loss. St. Anthony’s goaltending recorded the win with eight goals against, while Tyler Sapoff took the loss for West Islip. The result dropped West Islip to 3-9 on the season as St. Anthony’s continues to push for an unblemished campaign.
