St. Anthony’s Freshman saved their championship hopes with a commanding 5-1 victory over Middle Country Freshman at North Venue on Saturday, evening their best-of-three playoff series at one game apiece and forcing a winner-take-all Game 3. The Friars (17-3) answered Middle Country’s stunning 4-0 shutout victory in Game 1 by scoring five unanswered goals after falling behind early, completely flipping the script against the eighth-seeded Cougars (12-11) who are attempting to become just the third team in Suffolk County High School Hockey League history to capture a championship from that playoff position.

Middle Country struck first when Dylan Dechiaro found the net at 8:36 of the opening period, continuing the early momentum that had carried them to a 1-0 series lead. But St. Anthony’s quickly responded through Logan McCauley‘s even-strength goal at 2:39, with assist from Jake Evans, setting the stage for a dominant second-period explosion. The Friars completely took control in the middle frame, with Reginald Henry III scoring what proved to be the game-winner at 12:58, followed by back-to-back goals from Evans at 11:23 and 1:42, both set up by assists from Landon Ivezaj. McCauley capped the scoring with his second goal of the night at 2:22 of the third period, again assisted by Evans.

Evans delivered a masterful four-point performance (2G, 2A) that elevated his playoff totals to 11 points in just three games, showcasing the elite playmaking ability that has made him St. Anthony’s second-leading scorer despite appearing in only 13 regular-season games compared to teammates’ full 23-game campaigns. McCauley’s two-goal effort complemented his team-leading 21 goals and 41 points entering the contest, while Ivezaj contributed two assists to help fuel the offensive onslaught. The balanced attack proved too much for Middle Country goaltender Jack Lasalla, who had earned the victory in the semifinals against Smithtown but surrendered five goals despite what commentators described as “an excellent game” with several spectacular saves.

The turning point came from St. Anthony’s goaltending change, as freshman All-Star Brody Morbillo replaced the Game 1 starter and allowed just one goal while making several crucial saves to keep his team in the game during their comeback. Morbillo, who entered with a 2.00 goals-against average and undefeated 2-0 playoff record, provided the steady presence the Friars needed after being shut out in the series opener. His performance stood in stark contrast to Middle Country’s Dominic Graziano, who had posted the 4-0 shutout in Game 1 but did not see action in the decisive Game 2.

Physical play and bad blood boiled over throughout the contest, with nine total penalties assessed as both teams battled in their fifth meeting of the season. Middle Country’s Derek Johnson, described as the team’s best penalty killer, generated multiple scoring chances despite serving a second-period penalty, while St. Anthony’s Nicholas Neuner and Francesco Mannino each picked up four penalty minutes in the heated affair. The intensity reflected the championship stakes, with Middle Country seeking their first-ever freshman title while attempting to join 2015 West Islip and last year’s Aquinas-Sayville as the only eighth seeds to capture Suffolk County High School Hockey League championships.

The dramatic turnaround sets up a winner-take-all Game 3, continuing a remarkable playoff trend that has seen every series across all Suffolk County High School Hockey League divisions extend to the maximum three games this season. St. Anthony’s, who had lost just one game in regulation during the regular season before their Game 1 shutout defeat, demonstrated the resilience and offensive firepower that made them one of the league’s elite teams. Middle Country, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as they chase history, knowing they remain just one victory away from cementing their legacy as championship underdogs in a season where Giants and Goliaths have battled throughout the Suffolk County freshman ranks.
