Alec Giacoppi scored twice, including the game-winner, and added two assists as St. Anthony’s Black (JV) answered an early two-goal deficit with six straight goals in a 7-3 win over Connetquot/Sayville/BBP (JV) on Wednesday at The Rinx – South Rink. Nicholas Tizzano also scored twice for St. Anthony’s, which improved to 2-0-1-0 and remains unbeaten.
The visitors controlled the opening minutes. Matthew Proscia scored on the power play with 11:59 left in the first period, assisted by Tyler Jones. Just 54 seconds later, Nathan Burns converted a rebound off a feed from Jack Mooney to make it 2-0, and Connetquot/Sayville/BBP had the clear edge in play.
St. Anthony’s leaned on Liam Healy to change that. Healy entered the game with three goals and two assists in two games and owns one of the hardest shots in the JV division. He cut the deficit with an unassisted goal with 6:29 left in the first, then assisted on Gavin McCormack’s power-play goal with 2:08 remaining that tied the game 2-2 at intermission. Healy finished with a goal and two assists, and McCormack had a goal and two assists of his own.
From there St. Anthony’s stuck to a simple approach: win the faceoff, get bodies in front of the net, find the open man and shoot. That produced three second-period goals. Tizzano put his team ahead 3-2 with 12:48 left in the period, and Giacoppi followed 64 seconds later with the eventual game-winner. Jaxon Volpe pushed the lead to 5-2 when he knocked in a rebound with 7:09 left, and Tizzano, who had one of his goals on a tip-in off a rebound, made it 6-2 with 4:17 remaining in the third.
Mooney was Connetquot/Sayville/BBP’s steadiest defender and rang a shot off the post. Connetquot/Sayville/BBP called a timeout in the third. Nicholas Fielding beat a defender and scored top shelf, unassisted, with 1:08 left to end the run. Giacoppi closed the scoring on a power play with 18 seconds remaining, and the crowd barely reacted. Brandon Hujber earned the win for St. Anthony’s, allowing three goals, while Luke Andruszkiewicz took the loss for Connetquot/Sayville/BBP, which fell to 1-2-0-0.
St. Anthony’s will try to stay unbeaten in its next game, while Connetquot/Sayville/BBP looks to get back to .500.
