NORTH — Smithtown FR Red overcame an early deficit to defeat Connetquot Sayville BBP Freshman Red 4-2 in a SCHSHL playoff quarterfinal Monday night, advancing to face eighth-seeded Middle Country in the semifinals. The Bulls (18-2) erased a shocking 1-0 first-period deficit with three unanswered third-period goals to avoid what would have been a stunning upset by the lower-seeded visitors.
Nicholas Fielding provided the game’s most memorable moment when he scored a short-handed goal just 40 seconds into a Smithtown power play at 12:51 of the first period, giving Connetquot Sayville an unexpected 1-0 lead. The opportunistic strike, assisted by Ashton Petry, caught everyone off guard and gave the underdog visitors early momentum against a Smithtown squad that had dominated their two previous meetings this season by a combined score of 18-4.
Smithtown answered quickly through Brodie Rowe, who tied the game at 11:15 of the first period with assists from Dillon Dubeau and Logan Kern. Fielding restored Connetquot Sayville’s advantage at 13:27 of the second period with his second goal of the night, assisted by Jaxon Volpe and Tyler Jones, sending the teams into the third period with the visitors holding a 2-1 lead.
The third period belonged entirely to Smithtown, as the Bulls unleashed their offensive firepower to seize control. Nicolas Beccarelli tied the game at 2-2 just 17 seconds into the final frame with a deflection goal assisted by Michael Napolitano and Vincent Sellitto, completely shifting the momentum. John Mills then delivered the game-winner at 9:01, converting a setup from Dubeau to give Smithtown its first lead of the contest.
Connetquot Sayville goaltender Jake Degenfelder kept his team competitive throughout with multiple clutch saves, including stick saves on several prime Smithtown opportunities. However, the Bulls’ depth and sustained offensive pressure eventually wore down the visitors. Madden Catalanotto capped the scoring with 44 seconds remaining, assisted by Mills, to seal the 4-2 victory.
The win sets up a semifinal matchup with Middle Country, who pulled off their own upset by defeating top-seeded East Islip earlier in the playoffs. Smithtown will look to continue their championship pursuit Wednesday, while Connetquot Sayville’s season ends despite a valiant effort that far exceeded expectations based on their regular-season meetings with the Bulls.
