West Islip (VR) improved to 3-3 with an 8-3 victory over winless Longwood (VR) on Sunday at The Rinx – North Rink, building a five-goal first period that put the game away early. Ciaran Pollard scored twice and Nicholas Perpall, William Shields, Jackson Allen, Finn Wood, Thomas Albertelli and Liam Henshaw each added a goal for West Islip, spreading the offense across eight different goal-scorers.
The first period was decisive. Wood opened the scoring at 10:56, and West Islip capitalized on two power-play goals from Henshaw and Perpall before Pollard closed out the frame with goals at 6:24 and 0:33, the first of which stood as the game-winner. Longwood’s lone response in the middle period came from Brandon Scheuermann, who beat Tyler Sapoff at 13:02 with an assist from Aydan Azmoun to cut into the deficit.
Scheuermann was the story for Longwood in the third period, scoring twice more — an unassisted goal at 14:40 and another at 5:26 with help from Nicholas Gigante — to complete a hat trick in a losing effort. West Islip answered with power-play goals from Albertelli, Allen and Shields in the final period to pull away for good. Perpall finished with three points on a goal and two assists, while Pollard, Shields, Allen, Wood and Albertelli each posted multi-point nights for West Islip.
Sapoff earned the win in goal for West Islip, allowing three goals before Braiden Buccino closed out the game without allowing a goal. Anthony Frega took the loss for Longwood, with Christopher Primiani also seeing time between the pipes. Michael Paduano’s rough night included 14 penalty minutes as Longwood dropped to 0-6 on the season.
West Islip will look to build on this offensive showing as the season progresses, while Longwood searches for its first win of the year.
