Sachem Scores 3 in 42 Seconds, Dominates KPC 11-3

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (LISN) — Cameron Kalberer scored four goals and added two assists to power Sachem (1-0) to a lopsided 11-3 victory over the Kings Park/Commack Knights (0-1). Joe Wandling opened the scoring and tallied the eventual game-winner in a three-point performance. Tyler Loret added three assists and dominated possession for Sachem.
Anthony Mare backstopped Sachem to victory in his first career varsity start. Jackson Murray was stellar in goal for the Knights, often making two or three saves before Sachem scored. Tyler Burke made some impressive saves of his own in relief for KPC.
Wandling opened the scoring at 2:23 in the opening stanza. Wandling fired a shot that was blocked by KPC defenseman Anthony Haberman, but he recovered it and fired top-shelf to beat a sliding Murray.
Chase Saunders found the back of the net with 45 seconds left in the first frame to double the Sachem lead. Sachem forced a defensive-zone turnover, Murray made two big saves, but couldn’t stop Saunders from lifting it over his pad on the third try.
Eight seconds later, Kalberer struck to make it 3-0. James Drago collected the puck off the faceoff and fired a shot that was punched out by the blocker of Murray, but Drago recovered it and made a behind-the-back pass to Kalberer for a backdoor tap-in.
With less than 15 seconds remaining, Murray made a big-time save to deny Loret a breakaway goal. The KPC netminder made another key stop and lost his stick in the process, but Sachem would not be denied.
With just three seconds to spare, Wandling scored Sachem’s third goal in a span of 42 seconds on a shot from the back door.
KPC trailed by four after one, with all four goals against coming after the three-minute mark.
Just 48 seconds into the second stanza, Kalberer extended the Sachem lead to 5-0, burying a rebound after a shot from the point by Loret was turned aside by Murray. It was Sachem’s fourth unanswered goal in 1:33 and their fifth in a span of 3:11.
Less than a minute later, Kevin Abrams scored his first career varsity goal to put KPC on the board. Joe Mezzasalma raced up ice 1-on-2, fired a shot off Mare’s pad, and Abrams cashed in on the rebound.
Caiden Marcus restored the five-goal lead with 4:41 remaining in the 2nd period. Marcus slipped behind the defense and redirected a shot by Saunders past Murray.
Will Trapani scored his first career varsity goal to make it 7-1 with 3:21 left in the second frame. C.J. Pena created a 2-on-1 rush and slid it across to Trapani, who went five-hole.
After Trapani’s goal, Murray was relieved by Burke.
On the ensuing faceoff, Sachem came in 2-on-1 and Burke made a couple of big stops. After the puck cleared the KPC zone, Mezzasalma raced cross-ice to collect it, bolted toward the net, and went forehand-backhand to make it 7-2 just 20 seconds after Trapani’s tally.
Only 42 seconds later, Drago saucered a pass to Kalberer, who skated into it along the right-wing wall, cut toward the net on a partial breakaway, and went forehand-backhand to score a highlight-reel goal to complete the hat trick.
Just 19 seconds later, John Moody potted his first career varsity goal to make it 9-2 Sachem. Moody buried the rebound after Burke made a sensational stop on a partial breakaway by Kalberer.
Nineteen seconds later, Jackson Ciofrone fired back for KPC to cut the deficit to six. Ciofrone scored on the backdoor off a nice feed by Michael Miele, who picked up his first career varsity point on the play.
A flurry of penalties early in the final frame sent a total of six players — three on each side — to the penalty box.
Kalberer redirected a shot by Matthew Lengyel Jr. past Burke to make it 10-3 with 10:52 left in the 3rd period. Tyler Anderson went bar-down to make it 11-3 with 5:51 remaining in regulation.
