James Oconnor and Gregory Mast each finished with two goals and two assists, and Sachem got goals from nine different players in a 12-1 win over Connetquot/Sayville/BBP Red on Monday night at The Rinx – South Rink. The SCHSHL freshman opener was decided early. Sachem scored six times in the first period, controlling possession, winning faceoffs and getting to loose pucks first throughout the night.
Oconnor opened the scoring with 14:40 left in the first, and Declan Prin followed 54 seconds later with an unassisted goal that held up as the winner. Dylan Lashuk and Mast added goals before Justin Bovich converted on the power play. Jesse Atkins finished a quick one-timer with 2:20 left in the period to make it 6-0, completing a first period in which six different players scored for Sachem.
Sean Becker’s power-play goal early in the second extended the lead to 7-0. Connetquot/Sayville/BBP Red called a timeout late in the period, and the visitors responded soon after. Keith Jackson stole the puck and scored on the power play with 3:23 left, with Tyler Ferrante assisting, and the goal drew applause from the crowd. Samuel Friers was one of the visitors’ most effective players at extending possessions, particularly on the power play. Sachem answered quickly when Lashuk scored his second goal of the night with 1:07 remaining, restoring the seven-goal margin at 8-1.
Sachem kept rotating lines and forechecking in the third period. Lucas Martinez and Clark Beltram scored 55 seconds apart, and Mast added the night’s highlight while his team was a man down, stealing the puck and finishing an unassisted short-handed goal for an 11-1 lead that brought applause from the stands. Oconnor closed the scoring with 6:30 left, assisted by Mast. Colton Daly added three assists, and Bradley Skillman earned the win while allowing one goal.
Jake McDermott was charged with all 12 goals for Connetquot/Sayville/BBP Red but stayed with it through long stretches of Sachem pressure, and his work drew applause from the crowd more than once. Jackson’s goal was the visitors’ best moment on a night when they had trouble getting into the offensive zone.
Sachem starts the season 1-0-0-0, while Connetquot/Sayville/BBP Red will look to rebound from an 0-1-0-0 start.
