Sachem (VR) turned a tight contest into a laugher on Wednesday, scoring five unanswered goals in the third period to defeat Ward Melville (VR) 8-2 at The Rinx – North Rink. The win pushed Sachem to 11-3 on the season, while Ward Melville fell to 3-11.
The game was tightly contested through two periods. Alp Otcu opened the scoring at 13:42 of the first period, assisted by Joseph Capece and Sean Walsh, before Ward Melville’s Anthony Cerulli answered at 9:53. Nicholas McGuire restored Sachem’s lead late in the frame, and the teams traded goals again in the second period as Cameron Kalberer’s tally at 4:35 was answered by Cerulli’s second of the game just over three minutes later, leaving Sachem up 3-2 through 40 minutes.
The third period belonged entirely to Sachem. Cameron Kalberer struck again at 13:56, Colin Kalberer followed at 10:08, Christopher Ohea added a goal at 4:08, Gregory Monthie scored at 2:38, and Otcu capped the outburst with an unassisted goal at 1:59. Colin Kalberer finished with a goal and three assists for four points, while Cameron Kalberer and Otcu each posted two goals and an assist. Michael DiGirolamo picked up the win in net for Sachem, allowing two goals, while Robert Huhne took the loss for Ward Melville, allowing eight.
The victory marked Sachem’s second lopsided win over Ward Melville this season, following a 9-2 result back on November 5. With the season winding down and just a handful of games remaining for both clubs, Sachem continues to build momentum while Ward Melville looks to regroup down the stretch.
