Jeremy Wachnachter scored two power-play goals in the second period, Nick Mas added two in the third, and Rutgers University shut out Temple University 5-0 on Friday night at ProSkate in the season opener for both ACHA Division 1 programs. Markus Paltauf earned the shutout in net for Rutgers.
After a scoreless first period, Rutgers broke through on the power play. Wachnachter opened the scoring with 15:21 left in the second, assisted by Nolan Collison. He doubled the lead with another power-play goal with 11:36 remaining, this time set up by Kyle Easley and Collison. Thomas Apelizan made it 3-0 at even strength with 6:58 left in the period, with Nathan Case assisting.
Mas put the game away in the third. He scored with 8:54 to play, assisted by Harrison Albrecht, then added his second goal with 2:47 remaining off feeds from Colin Smargon and Easley. Collison and Easley each finished with two assists. Collison also received a 10-minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct toward an official late in the second period, as did Temple’s Aiden Croce.
Joe Gambino made 25 saves on 30 shots for Temple and took the loss. Temple did not score.
Rutgers will try to build on its season-opening win, while Temple looks for its first goal and first victory of the season.
