Joe Quigley scored on the opening shift and added another goal and an assist as Farmingdale State College beat Towson University 6-1 in its home opener Friday night at Northwell Health Ice Center. Farmingdale led 5-0 after two periods and outshot Towson 57-30 in a game delayed about an hour by Towson’s trip from Maryland.
Farmingdale started its top line of Thomas Ivers, Quigley and Joseph LaChase, and Quigley finished a backhand feed from Ivers with 19:44 left in the first period. Gavin Del Grosso made it 2-0 with 10:29 remaining in the period. He read the play at the blue line, broke away while Farmingdale was short-handed and scored five-hole, unassisted. That goal stood as the game-winner. Towson made frequent line changes early to keep fresh legs on the ice after its shortened warm-up, but it had trouble getting out of its own zone.
The second period put the game away. Timothy Devine scored on a drag-and-shoot with 15:58 left, assisted by Sam Nichols and John Leppert. The assist was the first point for Nichols, a transfer, in a Farmingdale uniform. Quigley then scored on the power play with 6:32 remaining, set up by Nicholas Johnson and John Crowdell. Forty seconds later, Johnson scored the first goal of his career with a quick move and a wrist shot while Crowdell screened in front, making it 5-0.
Ryan Kalina was the best player Towson had. He made 51 saves on 57 shots and kept the score from getting further out of hand on a night his team spent long stretches defending. Jeremy Wilson ended the shutout bid with 6:06 left in the third, scoring on a rebound with assists from Brady Matchett and Keegan Jensen. LaChase, Farmingdale’s captain, answered with 3:02 remaining by tapping in a feed from behind the net to finish the scoring.
Andrew Barron made 29 saves on 30 shots for the win, playing a positionally sound game with good rebound control. The teams skipped the postgame handshake to save it for the rematch, which is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
