Andrew Stempel holds on for Ward Melville, 9/15/25

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (LISN)Andrew Stempel allowed just one goal in his first career varsity start, backstopping the Ward Melville Patriots (1-0) to a 2-1 comeback, season-opening victory over the West Islip Lions. Jack Frisch scored the eventual game-winner, while Tyler Curley netted the equalizer for Ward Melville.

Tyler Sapoff was strong in goal for West Islip, allowing only two goals—both off redirects.

Thomas Albertelli opened the scoring in the second period, beating Stempel five-hole with 13:46 left to make it 1-0 Lions.

Just over a minute later, with 12:06 remaining in the frame, Curley tied the game on the power play. Jake Inclan fired a shot from the point that Curley redirected for his first of the season.

With 3:13 left in the period, Frisch scored the eventual game-winner. Lucas Shurman put the puck on net, and Frisch tipped it home for his first career varsity goal.

Stempel held strong in the third, shutting the door even after the Lions pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, securing the 2-1 Patriots victory.

The West Islip Lions will look to bounce back against Sachem on Monday, Sept. 22, at 8:10 p.m.
