Gregory Monthie scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner, as Sachem (VR) held off Connetquot/Sayville (VR) 4-2 on Wednesday at The Rinx – North Rink. The win keeps Sachem rolling as the club improved to 13-5, while Connetquot/Sayville fell to 8-10 with the season entering its final stretch.
Thomas Konkowski opened the scoring 9:45 into the first period, assisted by Alp Otcu, giving Sachem a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. Connetquot/Sayville answered in the second, with Matthew Campagnola converting a Logan Booth Alam and Richard Guterwill feed at 10:48, and Guterwill returning the favor with a power-play goal off Campagnola and Brent Brdey just under two minutes later to put the visitors ahead 2-1. Sachem’s Colin Kalberer erased that lead with a short-handed goal at 5:04, assisted by Monthie, tying the game 2-2 heading into the third.
The third period belonged entirely to Monthie. He capitalized on a power play at 7:01, assisted by Joseph Capece, to give Sachem the lead for good, then added an unassisted short-handed goal at 4:30 to make it 4-2 and put the game away. The finish gave Monthie a two-goal, three-point night, pushing him further up Sachem’s scoring ranks after he entered the contest with 15 goals and 26 points on the season.
Michael DiGirolamo picked up the win in goal for Sachem, allowing two goals. Connetquot/Sayville used three goaltenders in the loss – Reilly Hanley, Alexander Clark and Shane Kirby – with Clark allowing three goals and Kirby allowing one. The teams have met twice already this season, with Sachem winning both meetings, and Sachem will look to carry this momentum into its final handful of regular-season games.
