Middle Country Freshman turned a scoreless tie into a commanding lead with a devastating second-period outburst, scoring five goals in the frame to pull away from Smithtown FR Blue 6-2 at South on Monday night. The explosive middle period featured goals from five different players, including Derek Johnson‘s game-winner with 1:10 remaining in the frame.
Johnson, who entered the game leading Middle Country with 21 goals in 12 games, opened the scoring barrage at 14:20 of the second period with an unassisted tally. After Smithtown’s Gavin Delaney answered back at 8:26 with assists from Anthony Donnarumma and Lorenzo Muratore, Middle Country seized control with four unanswered goals in the final three minutes of the period. Jonathan Moehringer converted on the power play at 2:55, followed by Johnson’s game-winner and goals from Dylan Dechiaro and Konstantinos Krokidis in rapid succession.
The third period saw Middle Country add an insurance marker from Jesse Verdecanna at 2:43, while Smithtown managed just one response from Muratore on the power play with five seconds remaining in the game. The victory improved Middle Country to 9-9 overall and marked their second win over Smithtown this season, having previously defeated them 8-5 back in November.
Johnson’s two-goal performance highlighted a balanced offensive attack that saw six different players record points for Middle Country. Muratore led Smithtown with a goal and assist, but the team’s struggles continued as they fell to 5-14 on the season. The teams combined for 10 penalties in a chippy affair that saw Middle Country capitalize on their opportunities while weathering Smithtown’s late push.
