Nathaniel Menikheim‘s goal with 6:43 remaining capped a thrilling comeback as Bellmore-Merrick claimed the New York Islander High School Hockey League Middle School Championship with a 5-4 victory over Cold Spring Harbor at Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center on Tuesday night. The dramatic finale featured wild momentum swings, a late penalty with 3.5 seconds remaining, and a championship-deciding faceoff between two of the league’s premier players.

Cold Spring Harbor appeared poised for the title behind Henry Whelan‘s extraordinary four-goal performance, including three consecutive tallies that gave the Seahawks a 4-3 lead early in the second period. Whelan, who entered with 21 goals in nine games, completed his hat trick at 3:01 of the middle frame with an unassisted strike that seemed to put Cold Spring Harbor in command. The dynamic forward had terrorized opposing defenses all season, and his natural hat trick in the semifinal victory over WSP demonstrated his ability to take over crucial games.

But Bellmore-Merrick, led by playoff MVP Carter Tiefenwerth‘s clutch performance, refused to fold. Tiefenwerth, who entered averaging nearly three points per game with 23 goals and 20 assists in 15 contests, delivered the crucial equalizer at 6:25 of the second period with assists from Gianluca Milack. The goal marked his sixth of the playoffs, continuing a remarkable postseason run that included a four-goal semifinal performance against rival Long Beach. Derek Zummo added his second goal of the night just 16 seconds later, as Bellmore-Merrick stormed back to tie the contest 4-4 entering the final period.

The championship was decided when Jason Cohen found Menikheim for the game-winner, capping a furious rally that saw Bellmore-Merrick score three unanswered goals after trailing 4-2. The victory marked sweet revenge for the program, which had suffered an 8-0 loss to Cold Spring Harbor during the regular season on October 25th. Luke Walters was stellar in net for the champions, stopping 15 of 19 shots while weathering Whelan’s offensive barrage.

Drama peaked in the final seconds when MT Ali Sarakagloo was whistled for the game’s only penalty with 3.5 seconds remaining, giving Cold Spring Harbor one last desperate chance with the extra man. The Seahawks pulled goalie Emmanuelle Stein for a two-man advantage, setting up a heart-stopping faceoff between Tiefenwerth and Whelan that would decide the championship. Tiefenwerth won the crucial draw, securing Bellmore-Merrick’s first middle school title.

The victory provided redemption for a Bellmore-Merrick program seeking to establish its own championship legacy. While their varsity squad fell to Long Beach Marines in the high school final earlier this season, this middle school triumph offered hope for the future and bragging rights over their hated rivals. Cold Spring Harbor, which entered 15-2 and had dominated the regular season, saw their championship dreams dashed despite Whelan’s heroic individual effort in what commentators called one of the finest middle school games in league history.
