Maximus Scotti scored three goals and added two assists, and Smithtown/Hauppauge Red (FR) beat West Islip Blue (FR) 9-1 on Saturday at The Rinx – North Rink. Madden Catalanotto matched Scotti with a five-point game, scoring twice with three assists, as Smithtown/Hauppauge improved to 2-0-0-0.
Scotti scored both first-period goals. He opened the scoring unassisted with 13:36 left in the period, then made it 2-0 with 3:18 remaining, finishing a play set up by Brodie Rowe and Catalanotto. That second goal held up as the game-winner. Scotti entered the day with two points in one game and had matched that total before the first intermission.
Smithtown/Hauppauge took control with four goals in the second period. Catalanotto scored unassisted early in the frame, with 14:48 left, to make it 3-0. Gavin Delaney followed with 8:11 to go, finishing a well-built play from Catalanotto and Scotti. Scotti then completed his hat trick with 6:18 left on a feed from Rowe, and Rowe made it 6-0 with 2:38 remaining. Smithtown/Hauppauge kept the Scotti-Catalanotto-Rowe line on the ice regularly even after building the big lead, and that line kept up its pressure.
Michael Wasielesky, who had no points entering the game, scored with 11:29 left in the third and assisted on Gray Hoffmann’s goal 59 seconds later, which made it 8-0. The goal was Hoffmann’s first of the season. West Islip, playing with a short bench, got on the board with 6:24 left when Andrew Cascone used his speed to score shorthanded, with Sebastian Kent assisting. Catalanotto answered on the power play with 5:30 remaining, and the mercy rule put a running clock in effect for the rest of the game.
Rowe finished with a goal and three assists, and Wasielesky had a goal and two assists. James Keuchler earned the win for Smithtown/Hauppauge, allowing one goal. William Chero took the loss for West Islip, which fell to 0-2-0-0. Both teams will be looking to build on early-season results in their next games.
