Kevin Schwartz scored twice, including the game-winner, and Matthew Defeo had a goal and three assists as Kings Park/Commack beat Connetquot/Sayville/BBP 11-2 on Wednesday night at The Rinx – North Rink. It was the first win of the season for Kings Park/Commack, which improved to 1-1-1-0. Connetquot/Sayville/BBP fell to 0-2-1-0.
Neither team had won entering the game, so the matchup served as an early measuring stick for both programs. Kings Park/Commack scored first on the power play when Dominic Slevin, who came in with three goals in two games, scored with 8:20 left in the first period. Kyle Montaldo made it 2-0 just 27 seconds later, and Slevin’s soft hands and speed stood out all night.
Connetquot/Sayville/BBP’s student section came alive when Bennett King scored unassisted with 14:12 left in the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Kings Park/Commack answered eight seconds later on Schwartz’s goal. After Noah Bamonte made it 4-1, Nicholas Fielding pulled Connetquot/Sayville/BBP within 4-2 off a feed from Vincent Miciletto.
Kings Park/Commack responded again. Schwartz scored his second goal with 11:35 left on an assist from Defeo, and Defeo scored 15 seconds later to make it 6-2, which led the Connetquot/Sayville/BBP bench to call a timeout.
The timeout did not slow Kings Park/Commack. Robert Wimmer scored a shorthanded goal off a Defeo assist with 6:50 left, and Joseph Mezzasalma followed with a bar-down shot on the power play with 5:32 remaining. Cohen Ghicas and Slevin, who scored unassisted, added late goals for a 10-2 lead after two periods. Ghicas finished the scoring with his second goal, set up by Jake Landman, with 3:47 left in the third.
Schwartz and Wimmer each finished with three points, and Ghicas’s two goals were his first of the season. Grayson Eble, making his first varsity start of the season, earned the win and allowed two goals. John Higgins allowed 11 goals in the loss for Connetquot/Sayville/BBP, which will try to regroup in its next game against Northport.
