Luke Jarrett scored three goals to pace Smithtown/Hauppauge Blue (DV) to a 10-1 playoff victory over Sachem (DV) on Monday at The Rinx – South Rink. The win extended what had been a perfect 20-0 record entering the postseason for Smithtown/Hauppauge Blue, while Sachem, who came in at 8-8, saw its season pushed to the brink.
Smithtown/Hauppauge Blue wasted little time putting the game out of reach, scoring three times in the first period. Jarrett opened his big night at 1:42, Ryan Leicht added the game-winner at 6:04 with an assist from Vincent Sellitto, and Matthew Benstock capped the period at 10:21 with helpers from Joseph Jaquillard and Mason Nasta. Connor Krikau then took over in the second period, scoring twice within 44 seconds of each other at 14:10 and 13:26, both unassisted, before Andrew Katchen added another off a Leicht assist. Sachem’s lone goal came on a power play from Justin Hunter at 6:02 of the second, assisted by Jacob Minicozzi.
The third period belonged to Jarrett, who scored twice more — at 14:31 with an assist from John Mills and again just 15 seconds later, unassisted — to complete his hat trick. Joseph Costa and Matthew Ackerman each added a goal in the final frame to close out the scoring, with Ackerman also picking up an assist on Costa’s goal. In net, Sean Wohlgemuth earned the win for Smithtown/Hauppauge Blue, allowing one goal, while Sachem’s Michael Cagnetto and Adam Steisel combined to allow five each in a losing effort.
The result mirrored the dominance Smithtown/Hauppauge Blue has shown over Sachem all season, having outscored them 29-3 across their four regular-season meetings before this postseason rout. With the win, Smithtown/Hauppauge Blue moves forward in the playoffs looking to keep its unbeaten campaign alive, while Sachem will need a response in its next outing to keep its season going.
