Luke Ferazi scored three goals, Tierny Recenello added four assists and Farmingdale State College (M3) beat Hofstra University 11-3 on Saturday at Islanders Iceworks. Farmingdale improved to 5-1-0, and Hofstra fell to 2-1-0 with its first loss of the season.
Christopher D’Andrea opened the scoring on a breakaway with 19:16 left in the first period, and Daniel Cevallos made it 2-0 with 16:20 remaining. Cevallos, who entered the night without a point in four games, beat a defender and finished with a well-placed wrist shot for the first goal of his career. Hofstra answered with two goals 1:13 apart. Nico Buglione scored with 7:16 left, and James Van Eron tied the game 2-2 on a deflection with 6:03 remaining.
The tie lasted until Luke LaFata put Farmingdale back in front 3-2 with 1:59 left in the first. That goal started a run of six straight for the home team. Jaden Grillo scored the game-winner with 18:37 left in the second, and LaFata added his second goal to make it 5-2. Ferazi followed with his first of the night. Cameron Black tipped in a puck for his first career goal with 4:19 left in the period, putting Farmingdale ahead 7-2.
Farmingdale controlled possession and zone time for most of the game. Its forecheck kept Hofstra pinned in its own end, and Hofstra’s repeated clearing attempts often went for icing. Those whistles left tired Hofstra skaters on the ice through long shifts in the third. Donald Pace, Farmingdale’s captain, scored unassisted with 8:53 left in the third and finished with three points. Matthew Materazo gave Hofstra its best moment of the period, scoring unassisted while shorthanded with 6:30 remaining.
Ferazi, who entered with four goals on the season, finished his hat trick late with goals at 2:45 and 1:46 remaining in the third. He did much of his damage on rebounds and wraparounds. Jake Paul closed the scoring with 15 seconds left. PJ Tursi made 28 saves on 31 shots for Farmingdale. Steven Dimotheris stopped 37 of 48 shots for Hofstra, and he was busy throughout the night.
The win extends Farmingdale’s edge in a series it led 5-1-1 all-time entering the game, while Hofstra will look to recover from its first setback.
