East Islip Freshman Red capped off an unblemished regular season campaign with a commanding 6-1 victory over Smithtown FR Blue at North on Sunday, extending their remarkable undefeated streak to 18-0. The Redbirds exploded for four goals in the opening period, effectively putting the game away before Smithtown could find its rhythm.
The first period belonged entirely to East Islip, as they unleashed a relentless offensive assault that left Smithtown reeling. Jaxon Gerena opened the scoring at 12:52 with help from Joseph Barbarito, followed just 30 seconds later by Tyler Bitetto‘s game-winner assisted by Colin Clark. Luka Mazzarone and Alex Walsh added goals at 7:04 and 1:19 respectively, both set up by the playmaking of Rory Straub, giving East Islip a commanding 4-0 advantage after 15 minutes.
Rory Straub continued his stellar season with a three-assist performance, bringing his season totals to 15 goals and 14 assists in what has been a dominant freshman campaign. The versatile forward has been the catalyst for East Islip’s perfect season, consistently creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Colin Clark and Joseph Barbarito each contributed two points (1G, 1A), while six different Redbirds found the back of the net, showcasing the team’s balanced offensive attack.
Smithtown managed to break through in the second period when Brady Petite scored unassisted at 4:06, but East Islip responded with third-period goals from Clark and Barbarito to seal the comprehensive victory. The loss dropped Smithtown to 5-15 on the season, completing a season sweep for East Islip, who also defeated the Bulls 9-1 back in November.
With the regular season now complete, East Islip Freshman Red enters the postseason as the team to beat, having outscored opponents by wide margins throughout their perfect campaign. Their depth, skill, and chemistry will be tested as they pursue what could be a special championship run in the SCHSHL playoffs.
