Sacred Heart University (M3) turned a tight, physical playoff battle into a rout with a five-goal outburst across the final two periods, riding a Ryan Conroy hat trick to an 8-3 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College at Martire Family Arena on Friday night. The win pushed Sacred Heart to 1-0 on the young season, while St. Thomas Aquinas fell to 0-2 as its search for a first victory continues.
Conroy set the tone just 32 seconds into the contest, burying a power-play feed from Conall Gately and Jeremiah Ryan to give Sacred Heart the early lead. St. Thomas Aquinas battled back into the game in the second period behind a power-play strike from Jason Desalvo and an even-strength tally from Nicholas Delia, cutting into what had briefly been a 2-0 Sacred Heart cushion. But Sacred Heart answered every push. Brandon Pers opened the second-period scoring off a Giovanni Guerriero assist, and Brady Marszalek delivered the eventual game-winner at 13:37 of the middle frame, finishing a feed from Jack Reid. Conroy struck again at 11:22, tucking home an Aaron Shulman assist to complete his multi-goal night and put Sacred Heart firmly in control.
The third period turned into a showcase for Sacred Heart’s depth and discipline on the power play. Charles Tyrrell buried a man-advantage goal off feeds from John Aloi and Jeremiah Ryan, and Marszalek added his second of the night — and third power-play conversion of the game for his club — with an assist from Ryan Martin. St. Thomas Aquinas’s Jeremy Poggi answered with an unassisted power-play tally, but it was too little against a Sacred Heart attack that kept coming. Collin Roulston, who entered the night with two goals already on the season, added an even-strength goal, and Conroy capped his hat trick with an empty-net finish off a Pers assist, sealing the final margin.
The special teams battle was a story in itself, with 17 total penalties called and both power plays cashing in multiple times — Sacred Heart went 3-for-its-chances with goals from Conroy, Tyrrell, and Marszalek, while St. Thomas Aquinas got power-play goals from Desalvo and Poggi. Sacred Heart goaltender Jonathan Vitti turned aside 28 of 31 shots, while Michael Pippo made 35 saves on 43 shots in a tough outing for St. Thomas Aquinas as the visitors were outshot and outworked over the final 40 minutes.
With the win, Sacred Heart improves to 1-0 and puts early playoff pressure squarely on St. Thomas Aquinas, who will need to regroup quickly after dropping to 0-2. Conroy’s hat trick and Marszalek’s game-winning tally — his second straight multi-point playoff performance after opening the season with four points in his opener — give Sacred Heart plenty of momentum heading into their next matchup.
